At first, Allison and I didn’t know what to make of this sight: An unusual illumination in the sky north of our home in Naples in Southwest Florida. However, a Facebook friend quickly identified it as the aftermath of the SpaceX launch from Cape Canaveral on Florida’s east coast. It happened before dawn on June 29, 2018. I was taking Allison to the airport when I got this shot with my iPhone.

Here’s a really beautiful sunset – even from the parking lot of a Publix in Naples, Fla. I understand that the effect is partially caused by dust from the Sahara making its way across the Atlantic. I got this shot Aug. 10, 2018, while running an errand.
Ah, a real rain storm! We need a few here in Southwest Florida. Yes, we’ll get tons more, but it’s been dry. I got this shot with my iPhone while stopped July 30, 2018, at a traffic signal on my way home from work here in Naples.
I posted a photo of a wonderful sunrise yesterday and I have to do it again today! When you get a sunrise this nice, you photograph it! I got the shot July 14, 2018, as I gassed up my car here in North Naples, Fla.
I’ve posted before and I’ll post again today – and in the future – that a beautiful morning can make your day. I was greeted with this wonderful sunrise as I headed to work here in Naples, Fla., on July 13, 2018.
I enjoy the architecture of the Headquarters branch of the Collier County Public Library. It is styled after a Spanish mission and just a visual treat. I got this shot of the bell tower – look close and you’ll see a splash of color through the middle opening – on July 18, 2018, as I stopped to pick up a reservation. This branch of the library is closest to our home here in Naples, Fla.
Today, July 4, 2018, is Independence Day here in the United States. And, the Fourth of July is defined by fireworks. We visited friends on July 1 and got to see these fireworks at their home in Fort Myers. Happy Independence Day!

We don’t get too many (any?) tow planes flying over our home in Naples, Fla. However, one did go over on July 1, 2018, as it towed a banner for an insurance company. Of course, it was headed to the beach on a sunny afternoon. I guess from the direction it came from that it took off from the inland Immokalee Regional Airport, even though the Naples Municipal Airport is closer.

One errand to Publix. Four nice photos! I went on a quick trip to the Publix nearest our home in North Naples, Fla., on the evening of June 28, 2018, and … I first saw the sunset from the parking lot. Then, as I left, I saw the rainbow. Next was the clouds as I was stopped for a red light. Finally, an almost eerie gold-ish glow when I got home.

Ah, Naples in Southwest Florida. Where domestic muscle cars such as this Corvette and international rockets like this Lamborghini coexist peacefully in morning traffic. I’ll always wonder why Chevy put Camaro-like taillights on the ‘Vette and why this Lambo owner didn’t choose a little more exhibitionist color. Well, maybe he or she isn’t the owner. I got this shot just as the light turned green on June 28, 2018.
I don’t know why the Headquarters branch of the Collier County Public Library has the U.S. flag and POW-MIA flag flying in front, but not the State of Florida flag. I got this shot of the flags set against a nice cloud background on June 14, 2018, here in Naples, Fla. Interestingly, the Collier County government building across the parking lot has a flag pole with only the U.S. flag flying.
We couldn’t help but have a chuckle when we saw this man in line at a restaurant. He obviously forgot to turn off the flashlight feature on in his iPhone and then put it in his back pocket. I got the photo with my own iPhone on March 8, 2018, at Bravo! at Mercato here in Naples, Fla.
Here is the courtyard at the Collier County Public Library – Headquarters branch near our home in North Naples, Fla. I got the photos on June 10, 2018, and they show the design on benches. The courtyard of the mission-style structure is beautiful and it’s easy to miss the benches.
You can find beautiful plants in the courtyard at the Collier County Public Library – Headquarters branch near our home in North Naples, Fla. I got this photo on June 10, 2018.

We’re still looking for more good rain here in Southwest Florida. Here’s a photo I shot June 10, 2018, from our home in Naples and while the clouds were threatening, we didn’t get any rain. Sigh. Oh, and notice that the neighbor across the street still has a tarp on the roof — and we’re nine months out from Hurricane Irma!
I should have posted this sooner, but other blog entries got in the way. Here’s a beautiful sunset as I drove home after an evening errand here in Naples, Fla., on May 31, 2018. Wish I was at the beach for that one!
Today is Memorial Day 2018. In honor of the fallen who gave their lives for our freedom in the United States, we had this U.S.A.-themed dinner yesterday (May 27) for family at our home in Naples, Fla.
U.S. flags were at half-staff – not half-mast – on May 15, 2018, to honor Peace Officers Memorial Day. I got this photo of the flag at the Collier County government offices near our home in North Naples, Fla. It wasn’t windy, so I didn’t get the flag “flying.” BTW … half-mast is the definition of a flag flying aboard a ship or U.S. Naval stations ashore, while half-staff is on land elsewhere.
I just posted a photo of a beautiful morning from May 24, 2018, but it only took a day for an even more beautiful one to trump it (no pun intended). Here’s the nice morning of May 25, 2018, as I headed to work here in Naples, Fla. Remember, Tropical Storm Alberto is expected to form in the Gulf of Mexico over the coming weekend.
I took a rain photo from our patio here in Naples, Fla., on May 20, 2018, and here’s a close-up of water on the screen of our pool cage. In case you’re wondering, the chime bar on a wind chime and a bird feeder are the blurs in the background.
Yes, this is a very blah photo, but it sure contains important information: We’re getting rain in Southwest Florida on a daily basis! No, the chambers of commerce and visitors don’t like it, but the rain is desperately needed. I got this shot of our pool area on the early afternoon of May 20, 2018, here in Naples, Fla.
With blooms on our special hibiscus, I thought I’d post a photo of it today. It’s been about a year since I last posted a photo of it. The hibiscus was given to us in 2004 after my mother passed away. It has been growing ever since – and survived many prunings – at our home here in Naples, Fla. I got the shot May 11, 2018.
Some rain continues to fall each day here in our hometown of Naples, Fla. Here’s the view that greeted me on the morning of May 16, 2018, as I headed out to work.
Here’s a great example of how a morning looks … when you should stay home! It doesn’t get much more beautiful than this sunrise over a neighbor’s house here in Naples, Fla., on May 8, 2018. Well, if we lived on the Atlantic side of Florida it would be a spectacular beach sunrise!
I’ve posted eight photos of skywriters over Walt Disney World in my nearly four years doing this blog, but here’s my first from our hometown of Naples, Fla. I got this shot May 3, 2018, in a view from the office complex where I work. High winds were helping to quickly dissolve the words and I didn’t get a chance to see it finished.

Sigh. It’s too bad that I couldn’t freeze time and keep every day like the early afternoon on May 6, 2018. Here’s the sight of our pool and patio here in Naples, Fla. It just doesn’t get any better on a Sunday afternoon.
Here are my supplies for a wonderful Saturday on the patio: My tea with lemon; DVDs and clickers for video entertainment; my Kindle for reading; and a towel for after jumping into the pool. It’s how my morning started on April 28, 2018, here at home in Naples, Fla.
The courtyard at the office building where I work here in Naples, Fla., has been visited almost daily by this Pileated Woodpecker. I first posted photos of it in April, but got this shot on May 1, 2018. I wish I had my Nikon … an iPhone camera isn’t that great.

OK, I like taking photos of our patio at our home here in Naples, Fla. My excuse for posting this one from the early evening of April 25, 2018, is that it is my first Instagram photo. The setting sun is always wonderful!
I’ve posted photos of the blooms on the large Desert Rose on our patio, but the small one on April 22, 2018, had this beautiful bloom of its own! I got the shot at our home here in Naples, Fla.
I’m never ceased to be amazed at how serene and beautiful I find the courtyard of the Collier County Public Library – Headquarters branch on a random visit. I stopped on my way home here in Naples, Fla., to pick up a couple of reserved films on April 23, 2018, and got this shot.

Rain! Finally, here in North Naples during this very, very dry spring. This photo shows the dark clouds that brought a nice shower. I got these shots on April 22, 2018.
Rain! Finally, here in North Naples during this very, very dry spring. This photo shows earlier dark clouds that didn’t bring rain but merely accented the wonderful sun shining down on our pool. I got these shots on April 22, 2018.
As I went out early on April 21, 2018, you could smell the smoke across North Naples, Fla., from brushfires in the region. You could also see the smoke’s haze – look close and it’s obvious in this photo.

The beauty of nature can be fleeting. Here’s a wonderful cloud that didn’t maintain this shape for long after I got the shot as I headed to work here in Naples, Fla., on the morning of April 19, 2018.
It’s another Gardenia season here in Southwest Florida. Here are examples of the blooms on our Gardenia bushes at our Naples, Fla., home on April 16, 2018. According to Wiki, the genus was named for Scottish-born American naturalist Dr. Alexander Garden.

Here’s a Pileated Woodpecker that was a nervous wreck on April 13, 2018, in the courtyard of the office complex where I work. It was flitting from tree to tree and even pecking at its own reflection in windows. At least a little diversion on a Friday here in Naples, Fla.

The hibiscus is hardy and easy to care for – basically, you just water it – and then you get beautiful blooms such as this one. I got this shot on our patio at our home here in Naples, Fla., on April 7, 2018. I don’t recall which variety is this pink hibiscus, but I do know a yellow bloom denotes the “Fort Myers” hibiscus – and that’s a city just north of us!

It’s always nice to see a beautiful cloud as you pull into your driveway after work. Here’s the cloud that greeted me as I parked at our home here in Naples, Fla., on March 26, 2018.
I did some grilling on our patio here in Naples, Fla., on the evening of April 11, 2018, and also enjoyed the setting sun’s rays highlighting the beautiful orchid that Stephen and Emily gave us at Easter!
The change to Daylight Saving Time (remember, there’s no “s” at the end of Saving) brings a new view while headed out to work. I got this shot the morning of March 14, 2018, as I left our home in Naples, Fla.
We returned to Daylight Saving Time here in Naples, Fla., on March 11, 2018. The next morning as I went to work, I got this shot with my iPhone. It’s darker than normal – naturally – and the moon looked really nice as the dawn approached.
With our patio finally re-screened after Hurricane Irma six months ago, I got a chance to tidy up the plants and replace a couple. The blooms on our Desert Rose are just beautiful. I got this shot on March 18, 2018, at our home in Naples, Fla.

My favorite tree I see each spring season is the Tabebuia. There’s a really special one in the neighborhood next to ours here in Naples, Fla., that I always enjoy. However, this year it shows the damage from last September’s Hurricane Irma. The photo above is what I saw March 10, 2018. The smaller photo is from March 2015. Quite a difference. Don’t be deceived by the trees in the background as they make the Tabebuia look fuller than it is.
Here’s another example of packaging inefficiency. I work in a dental office here in Naples, Fla., and this vial came in this box to our office on March 5, 2018. Sigh. I know it is inefficient, but I’m sure there’s an explanation. Not a good one, but an explanation. And, no, the vial wasn’t refrigerated or needed special handling and was wrapped only in the bubble wrap at the top of the box.
I had jury duty on March 19, 2018, and was not chosen to serve on one. I got this shot of the front of the Collier County Courthouse and my juror sticker on my shirt during a break here in Naples, Fla.

Many of our family’s celebration dinners are held at our favorite Japanese steakhouse here in Naples, Fla. And, a recent tradition is the posting on my blog of a photo of the fiery presentation by the chef. I got this photo on March 18, 2018, at Da Ru Ma during a dinner celebrating multiple birthdays.
Another nice time of year when the sun sets perfectly in the background of our kitchen window here in Naples, Fla. I got this shot March 19, 2018.
Ah, it’s that perfect time of year here in Southwest Florida: It is officially Spring!. Our weather is great (getting warmed up for summer!), we’re in DST and it’s not yet hurricane season. Plus, a beautiful sunrise in your mirror makes a Saturday morning better! I got this shot March 24, 2018, while waiting at a traffic signal near our home in Naples, Fla.
Ah, I love my tea. And I like it at work, too. Here’s my Twinings of London travel tumbler (we got a pair at the United Kingdom Pavilion at EPCOT at Walt Disney World) next to my sunglasses and desk buddies at work here in Naples, Fla., on March 13, 2018. Much as I like the Twinings company because of its association with WDW, I buy my loose leaf China black tea from the Holy Mountain Trading Company of San Francisco.
You’ve heard of Easter lilies? Well, here’s an Easter orchid! Our son and his girlfriend brought this as a gift for us hosting Easter dinner for the family. I got the shot after they left on April 1, 2018, at our home in Naples, Fla.
We need rain very badly here in Southwest Florida and all I see are clouds like this one: A puny dark spot of rain at the bottom that won’t bring anything near our home in Naples, Fla. I got this shot April 2, 2018, as I drove home from work.
Ah, a splash of color for a miniscule “red sky” moment on April 2, 2018. Photos never really capture the true beauty of the color of such a morning, but my iPhone camera tried. I got the shot as I headed to work here in Naples, Fla.
OK, it’s a little waste of water, but I was trying to capture the setting sun’s rays lighting up the water from the hose. And most went onto our patio plants (or in the pool). I got the shot April 4, 2018, at our home here in Naples, Fla.
Here’s a nice mid-week treat: A meat lover’s pizza from Leoni’s here in Naples, Fla. I got the shot before diving in on April 4, 2018.
I’ve posted photos before of small items shipped in large boxes. The pure lack of efficiency in such shipping offends my sense of logic – but I’m sure some corporate blockhead has a reasonable explanation. I got this shot April 27, 2018, at the office where I work in Naples after we received this packet of stickers in this box.
Ah, a beautiful sunrise is always an enjoyment. I got this shot of a sunrise making my Sunday morning even better on April 29, 2018, near our home in Naples, Fla.
I found a small screw at our office here in Naples, Fla., and I’m gonna show it to you! It’s not going to join my “desk buddies,” but it makes for a passable photo. I got the shot May 1, 2018.
We were supposed to have rain here in Naples, Fla., from noon forward on May 5, 2018. We got clouds early, but the system moving over Florida from the Bahamas didn’t bring much rain as early as forecast. We got some just before 5 p.m., but only the amount of a typical afternoon shower.

I put up a new bird feeder outside our pool cage screen here in Naples, Fla. I was watching television on the patio May 6, 2018, when a beautiful blue jay began feeding. I wasn’t able to get a good photo, but here’s a bad one that gives you a view. I’ll try to do better the next time …
With a lot more rain on the way for Southwest Florida because of a developing tropical storm headed to the Gulf of Mexico, we’ll be seeing clouds here in Naples but not as pretty as this sight that greeted me at our home on the morning of May 24, 2018.
With Tropical Storm Alberto expected to form in the Gulf of Mexico any time now, it’s going to rain here in Naples in Southwest Florida. I got this shot at the office where I work on May 25, 2018, and we’re going to be seeing more of this kind of scene.
The storm named Alberto is long gone from the Gulf of Mexico, west of Southwest Florida, but we’re still getting clouds. I got this shot driving home here in Naples on May 28, 2018.
My iPhone’s autofocus caught the patio screen when I photographed this Blue Jay. I’d been trying to photograph a pair of cardinals, but the jay arrived and scrounged on the ground outside our patio – and beneath a bird feeder – on May 27, 2018, at our home here in Naples, Fla.

Here’s what happens when you don’t know where the tree you’re cutting down will land. In this case, it was pretty much blocking the entrance of this condominium complex in Naples, Fla. I got the shot on June 1, 2018, as I left work.
I always enjoy photographing a beautiful sunset. Here’s one from June 3, 2018. The view is from near our home in Naples, Fla. It was another evening where I wish I had been at the beach to enjoy the sunset!
Some fires in the swamps to the east of our home here in Naples, Fla., have had their smoke blanket the area and, while not obvious in this photo, did allow the highlight of the sun in this photo I took on June 8, 2018.
Here is a scene of a storm that I shot on June 11, 2018, as I drove home from work here in Naples, Fla. The rip of dark clouds in the distance is the harbinger of the rain to come.
Here is a scene after a storm on June 11, 2018, here in Naples, Fla. We got some and, look close in this photo, you’ll see water beaded on our pool cage screen with a beautiful sunset behind.
Clouds are very photogenic in early June here in Naples in Southwest Florida. This storm front coming over a Publix parking lot near our home on June 13, 2018, looks similar to the spaceships coming over cities in the original “Independence Day” film.
This photo doesn’t do justice to the almost ephemeral look of the edge of this cloud. I saw this over the top of our home here in Naples, Fla., on June 12, 2018, as I returned home from work. The thin cloud had a wonderful texture and I only somewhat captured it with this photo from my iPhone.
We’re gonna be getting some new orchid blooms on our patio here in Naples, Fla. I got this shot on our patio on June 16, 2018.
I already posted a photo of un-opened blooms on this orchid on our patio here in Naples, Fla., but now you see the full blooms. I got this shot on June 24, 2018.
I’m not fond of posting “bad” photos and this isn’t a good one, but I do like the elements in this one (no pun intended with the weather). I was using “live photo” on my iPhone to try to capture some lightning bolts in storm clouds over our home here in Naples, Fla. While I didn’t catch any lightning, I did get the nearly full moon just above the rim of the storm clouds … and you can see the curl of its edge on the right. I got the shot June 18, 2018.
If you ever wondered how really “puffy” clouds appear, then here’s your answer. I shot this cloud on my way home for work in Naples, Fla., on June 7, 2018.

I know this is just a basic photo of rain coming down on our patio here in Naples, Fla. However, it’s kinda beautiful since we NEED THE RAIN. Thanks for the rain! I got the shot June 24, 2018.
I had to take this photo at sunrise on July 4, 2018, because of how beautiful I found the cloud. However, it would have been much better if I was able to get a better line-of-sight for the photograph. Ah, well … still, it was a beautiful cloud here in Naples, Fla.
Can you see the difference? After a rain storm, you can see which is the newer screen panel(s) on our patio here in Naples, Fla. After Hurricane Irma, we needed to replace a dozen – it was the only damage to our home, thank goodness! Now, after this downpour on July 3, 2018, you can see the big screen between the two others. The older screens hold the water, while the newest one is nearly invisible in this photo.
Here’s a storm cloud boiling up in the late afternoon to the east of our home in Naples, Fla. I got the shot on July 5, 2018, as I drove home from work, but it is not as nasty a storm as I previously photographed.
The WalMart nearest our home here in Naples, Fla., just modified barriers at one entrance. Hmmm. I guess the original three (missing in this photo) were in the no-parking lane. Otherwise, why do it? Can’t be for security, since the original three could stop a tank. Plus, it’s obvious that WalMart can certainly find a way to better spend its money on the store and its facilities. I got this shot on June 23, 2018.

It’s been nearly eight years since I left the Naples Daily News after a 30-year career. Today? Well, it’s difficult to criticize, but when I see near our home in North Naples, Fla., that the Daily News has a Bonita Daily News paper box at a nearby convenience store … that’s a sad commentary on how low they can go from making sure everything is top-notch. The Bonita Springs community is miles north of us and although it is a Daily News publication, that region’s boxes shouldn’t be in Naples. Sigh. I got this shot June 30, 2018.
Summer rain isn’t the Johnny Rivers song here in Southwest Florida, as the afternoon cycle of precipitation is back in full swing here. Here was one front moving in near our home in Naples on the afternoon of July 11, 2018.
OK, it’s a summer stereotype … a new grill for the patio! Our philosophy is easy about gas grills: Buy an inexpensive on – not a cheap one, mind you – and use it three or four years before tossing it. No repairs; no added expense. This Char-Broil 4-burner model set us back $229 plus tax at Loews here in Naples, Fla.

Even rain clouds moving in can make a nice photo. I got this shot on a quiet Saturday afternoon while spending time on the patio of our home here in Naples, Fla. I took the photo July 21, 2018.
Here isn’t the best example of a sunrise photo, but you couldn’t beat the moment in person. I got this shot on July 22, 2018, as I ran a very early morning errand here in Naples, Fla. It set the tone for a wonderful day.
I enjoy celebrating a beautiful morning by posting the photo on this blog. Well, here’s another one! I got this shot with my iPhone as I left for work on the morning of July 24, 2018, here in Naples, Fla. We need more rain and this cloud was a good omen – but only a little bit fell on our neighborhood.
Here’s another example of how photographs can never replace actually seeing a color. Here’s a beautiful sunset – behind me – brightening clouds to the east. The photo is OK, but seeing the real thing was a real treat. I got the shot as I ran an evening errand near our home in Naples, Fla., on July 26, 2018.
A rainbow is something else – along with cranes and helicopters in flight – that I cannot resist photographing. Here’s one that we saw coming out of dinner on the early evening of July 28, 2018, here in Naples, Fla.
Rain is good here in Southwest Florida and these were wonderful clouds I photographed from our home in Naples on Aug. 2, 2018.
I don’t believe buzzards will begin to compete for my photographic attentions in the same way as helicopters and contrails, but I got this shot on July 21, 2018, after watching them sail above our neighborhood here in Naples, Fla.

No, I wasn’t photographing a nuclear blast on the morning of Aug. 5, 2018. It was a spectacular sunrise here in Naples, Fla. I was running some early errands when I got the shot with my iPhone while waiting at a red light.
Storm clouds are worth photographing now in Southwest Florida as we can use the rain. Here’s what the sky looked like in Naples, Fla., on Aug. 8, 2018, as I drove home from work.
What’s this? A Halloween display? In August? That’s right! I got this shot Aug. 18, 2018, at the Lowes store near our home here in Naples, Fla. In recent years I’ve thought that Halloween had become the forgotten “holiday” since Christmas displays usually now begin to crop up in September. However, Lowes shows that there’s life left in Halloween – and they put the display in the correct place: Near the power tools section!
