I got this beautiful sunset photo with my iPhone on our patio here in Naples, Fla., on the early evening of Aug. 24, 2018. I looked out the slider and saw the color, grabbed the iPhone and got the shot. This is an untouched image except I resized it to 1,200 pixels wide. No color balance; no cropping.
Yesterday (Sept. 12, 2018), I posted a beautiful sunrise photo from Sept. 11, 2018. Well, there was another one on Sept. 12 and here it is! I just can’t get enough of beautiful sunrises here in Naples, Fla.
Yesterday, I posted photos of neat clouds before sunrise. Today? Here’s what the neat speckled cloud cover over Southwest Florida looked like at sunrise. I got this photo on the morning of Nov. 23, 2018, here in our hometown of Naples, Fla.
No, we didn’t move to mountain country. The big dark area in the background of this photo I took just after 6 a.m. on March 2, 2019, here in Naples, Fla., isn’t a mountain and our horizon didn’t change. That’s a big, dark cloud that’s blocking the beginning of sunrise. A really interesting sight.
Here’s another example of how I do not grow plants: Put them out of sight and leave them alone. Here’s an aloe vera plant I put behind out home and out of sight from our patio. Getting regular watering from the sprinkler, it has flourished to the point of blooming! I don’t know if these blooms will turn red (some aloe vera plants have red blooms), but these aloe vera blooms are a first for us! I got this shot on March 9, 2019, at our home here in Naples, Fla.

You probably call it a “bird of paradise” flower, but its real name is Strelitzia! Here’s ours and this bloom is a little past its prime. I got the shot Jan. 18, 2019, at our home here in Naples, Fla.
Debbie got a photo of a cardinal at our bird feeder and on March 23, 2019, I got this shot of another bird as it took to flight. The screen makes for an interesting effect. The bird feeder is outside the patio of our home here in Naples, Fla.

Later tonight – Jan. 20, 2019 – and into tomorrow morning, you’ll be able to see the special celestial event of a “supermoon” and a total lunar eclipse. Here’s the nearly full moon I photographed as I got home from work on Jan. 18 and it was visible even in bright sunshine. Make sure you check it out!
Our family tradition of Christmas Eve dinner at the Da Ru Ma Japanese steakhouse continued for 2018 as this flaming burst from the chef shows. The restaurant here in our hometown of Naples, Fla., became our favorite 24 years ago when our son enjoyed the flaming show for the first time. Since then, we’ve returned every year for Christmas Eve and other family dinners.

I again drove out of my way to try to get a great photo of a sensational sunset here in Naples, Fla. I was driving home from work when I got this shot on Dec. 28, 2018.

It was a wonderful moment to see this rainbow as I drove to work here in Naples, Fla., on Dec. 11, 2018. My day was much better because of the view.
A full moon makes for some interesting cloud shots. Add in the illumination from a parking lot’s lights and you get an interesting effect. I this shot with the parking lot’s illumination on the trees early on the morning of Nov. 23, 2018. I ran a very early morning errand here in Naples, Fla. and took advantage of the neat sky for a photo with my iPhone.

OK, there are a lot of things you’ll see at a Walmart store at 5 a.m., but I never expected a pair of high-heels left on a parking lot lamp post. Hmmmm. I got this shot on Nov. 20, 2018, as I snagged a movie early near our home here in Naples, Fla.
Here’s why we hate standard time: Look out our kitchen window here in Naples, Fla. At left is from 6:32 p.m. on Nov. 3, 2018 — the “before” photo on the day before this year’s time change. At right is from approximately the same time on Nov. 5, 2018 – the “after” photo in standard time. Sigh. You could see our pool and the remains of the sunset before, but not after. Also, the color balance is different because my iPhone’s camera’s light meter saw it differently because of the light outside.
A red sky at morning’s warning is out for folks in North Carolina who are in the path of Hurricane Florence, but I can’t resist showing a beautiful sky here in Naples in Southwest Florida on Sept. 11, 2018. The two photos show how your view determines the best view.
I have to take a moment whenever I see a sunrise as beautiful as this. I also usually take a photo and post it on this blog. I got this shot here in Naples, Fla., as I walked into work on Oct. 10, 2018.
I don’t get much in the way of photos of birds at our bird feeder here at our home in Naples, Fla., because even if I’m ready with my Nikon or iPhone, the slightest movement and away they go! I got this shot of a cardinal on Oct. 7, 2018. However, look close, the pool cage screen is the point of focus of the shots. Sigh. Still, not bad …

It might not look like much of a photo, but this shot I got of a squirrel on our pool cage screen here in Naples, Fla., on Oct. 3, 2018, is notable. It is the first time in more than 18 months that I’ve seen a squirrel here in our neighborhood. It’s quite a mystery why they disappeared. Hmmmm

When our children were very little, they called the Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church‘s main building the “witch’s hat.” The church, which is near our home in North Naples, Fla., has signature steeples. I got this shot on the evening of Sept. 7, 2018, as I ran a quick, late errand.

Birds of a feather! Or, if you’re into movies, you might say, “Bird on a Wire” from 1990 with Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn. In any case, I got this shot of birds on utility lines on Aug. 19, 2018, as I ran early errands near our home in Naples, Fla.
Look in the distance and you’ll see the rays of a bright sun reflected off “fluffy,” bright white clouds. Overhead? The storm front as it passed over Naples, Fla., on Sept. 7, 2018. I got this photo while stopped at a red light near our home. Just a little while earlier, the downpour was coming out the gutter at the office where I work.

We’re finally into the rainy weather pattern of summer here in Southwest Florida. I got this shot of a storm brewing to the east of our home in Naples, Fla., on Aug. 19, 2018. I was headed to a driving range, but it was closed.
We’ve had a wonderful full moon for a few days now and here’s a look at it from the evening of Aug. 25, 2018. The moon is to the left-side of the frame (the white light). I was headed home here in Naples, Fla., from a late errand when I got the shot with my iPhone.
I saw this wonderful just-after-sunset scene on Aug. 28, 2018, as I left Publix near our home here in Naples, Fla. However, none of the photos does the clouds justice. Sigh. Well, I’ll get a better shot next time.

A medical products company called Arthrex is a great local employer here in Naples, Fla., and its ongoing expansion means more jobs and construction. Here’s a photo I got Aug. 26, 2018, as I ran an errand. It shows the big new building going up – note the American flag prominently displayed – near out home in North Naples. The photo isn’t too good because the sun is somewhat behind the building and therefore no direct illumination on the side I was photographing.
I have a secret to growing these orchids: Ignore them. I put these in a pot and leave it on the patio. Bang! They grow! I got this shot on our patio here in Naples, Fla., on Sept. 8, 2018.
More photos mean six postings on this blog today! I needed one more and got it when I ran a late errand on Sept. 11, 2018: Three rabbits were feasting on Floratam grass in our front yard next to my car here in Naples, Fla.
I recently posted a photo of a sunrise here in Naples, Fla., that appeared to be an atomic blast on the horizon and now here’s one of a sunset that looks like a nuke was set off in the distance. I was returning home on the evening of Sept. 17, 2018, when I took this photo.
Thankfully, we’re still getting rain just about every late afternoon – and there are a bunch of new disturbed areas in the Atlantic as hurricane season churns on. Here is one photo I took on my way home here in Naples, Fla., on Sept. 21, 2018.

Here is simply the best kitchen device I’ve ever used: A pull-chopper. I like make three-chili chili here in Naples, Fla., and this little gadget is wonderful for chopping the peppers and onion. I got this shot Sept. 17, 2018, as I prepared my latest batch.
I should have driven further east on Sept. 22, 2018, as I ran errands early on that Saturday. I saw how the sunrise made this cloud so beautiful, but I couldn’t get a great photo from where I had to turn north here in Naples, Fla. Ah well, it’s not like we’re gonna run out of sunrises.
It was a stormy sky over our home here in Naples, Fla., on Sept. 25, 2018. The setting sun gave nice illumination to these nasty rain clouds.
You won’t believe it, but this isn’t a setting sun. It’s a post-sunrise full moon after 7 a.m. in morning here in Naples, Fla., on Sept. 25, 2018. I got this shot on my way to work.
I couldn’t run an errand to Sam’s Club here in Naples, Fla., on Sept. 29, 2018, as the store had been evacuated and this North Collier Fire Control & Rescue District was out front. Most likely a fire alarm had been triggered, but I didn’t know – and the local newspaper certainly didn’t manage to post anything about it. Ah well …
I couldn’t run an errand to Sam’s Club here in Naples, Fla., on Sept. 29, 2018, as the store had been evacuated and this North Collier Fire Control & Rescue District responded and customers and staff waited in the parking lot.
Here’s another example of extreme packaging! This shipment – a pea-sized part in the plastic bag that’s for the compressor in the medical office where I work – came in the envelope and that envelope was in the big box. Wow. What a waste. I got this shot Oct. 5, 2018, here in Naples, Fla.
Ah, a beautiful sunset on Oct. 6, 2018 – for what we could see of it from our patio here in Naples, Fla. Only a little while earlier it was raining. It was a beautiful evening on many counts!

Yesterday, I posted a sunset. For today’s blog, I’m posting the sunrise of Oct. 7, 2018. Actually, there are two photos: One shows the sunrise and the other from just before when the moon was visible (it’s the bright spot left-center and not the lens flare center-right). A beautiful morning here in Naples, Fla.

It was a cloudy opening to the Saturday morning of Oct. 13, 2018. However, those clouds gave way to a much more beautiful day. I got this photo at our home here in Naples, Fla.

It has been really hot here in Southwest Florida for too long a time now. Here’s the blazing sun as I returned to our neighborhood in Naples on Oct. 17, 2018.
It was the end to a very hot weekend in Naples, Fla., on Oct. 21, 2018, when I headed to pick up pizza and wings for a family dinner. A nice cloud formation greeted me and we’re looking for some cooler weather to arrive this week. The brutal summer-like temperatures have lasted too long this season.
I truly enjoy the transitory beauty of a sunrise. You take the sun rising and clouds and here’s what you get. Plus, on a weekend morning, it’s all the better. I got this shot at our home on Oct. 27, 2018, after running some early Saturday errands.
Halloween’s over. It’s November now. However, here’s a parting selfie I took on Halloween 2018: I was ready to greet “trick or treaters” at our home here in Naples, Fla.
You’d have to have been asleep for the past year not to realize how many people are voting in the midterm election! Early voting here in Naples, Fla., is very, very popular to say the least. I got this shot as I went to the Headquarters Library branch on Nov. 3, 2018. This one shows candidates’ supporters setting up with signs to show those going to vote.

I got this shot as I went to the Headquarters Library branch on Nov. 3, 2018. You need to squint, but the line goes all the way to the back of the courtyard and then to the back right edge of the photo.
Light pollution? There was a little too much illumination in the night sky here in Naples, Fla., on Nov. 5, 2018, because at 8:20 p.m. clouds were highlighted. I go the shot leaving our home as a I ran a late errand.
I got this shot of a cloud on my way home from work here in Naples, Fla., on Nov. 5, 2018. I call this, “blog fodder.”

If what you see as you leave home for work on any given morning can make your day better, then there’s no doubt my Oct. 26, 2018, was better because of this view. I was leaving home here in Naples, Fla., when I got this shot.

I don’t get any great angle to shoot photos of the big buildings being constructed here in North Naples, Fla., by the medical products company Arthrex. Still, here is a photo I got Nov. 3, 2018, as construction continues.

No, that’s not a fire in the distance with smoke overhead – we’re in Naples in Florida, not the wildfires in California. That’s a beautiful sunset I didn’t see from the beach! I got this shot on Nov. 11, 2018, while running an errand just before 6 p.m. in the just-started Eastern Standard Time. Sigh. Oh, for the DST to return …
Thanksgiving next week, but Christmas decorations are out of the attic! I got this shot Nov. 11, 2018, as we began to decorate for the Christmas holidays here in Naples, Fla.
Another weekend, another beautiful sunrise. Some low clouds punctuated this morning sky on Nov. 17, 2918, near our home here in Naples, Fla. However, it was a beautiful, sunny and cool day in Southwest Florida.
Here’s a day told in clouds from my hometown of Naples, Fla. This one started the Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018, with a beautiful sunrise.

Here’s a day told in clouds from my hometown of Naples, Fla. The final one from Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018, shows rain clouds as night was falling and I was headed to pick-up carry-out at a restaurant.
The Christmas season is upon us, as you can see from folks visiting the display in front of the Sugden Theatre in the heart of Naples, Fla. I got this shot after dinner on Nov. 20, 2018. Ah, too bad they decided to call it the “Theatre” with the Old English spelling instead of the American English spelling. No matter, it’s a beautiful facility.
The Christmas season is upon us, as you can see from a display in the heart of Naples, Fla. I got this shot before dinner on Fifth Avenue South on Nov. 20, 2018.
I snapped this shot of the wine wall at Ocean Prime here in Naples, Fla., on Nov. 20, 2018, with my iPhone. We had a family dinner at this beautiful, excellent eatery in the heart of the downtown Fifth Avenue South district. We enjoy our visits to Ocean Prime and I wanted to share this image with you.
Gosh, I love to photograph contrails. I was on a lunch break on Nov. 29, 2018, near our home here in Naples, Fla., and I saw this pair of contrails. I diverted off my route home to get a better photo.
I didn’t have my Nikon DSLR to properly shoot the sunlight in the bougainvillea blooms at the Collier County Public Library’s Headquarters branch on Dec. 2, 2018, but I did have my iPhone. I was picking up a movie – of course, why else go the library? – when I noticed how the sun was backlighting the blooms. The library branch is near our home here in Naples, Fla.
I went out of my way to get this sunset photo perfectly framed as I drove home from work here in Naples, Fla., on Nov. 26, 2018. I was driving home northbound and turned off so I could get this west-facing shot.
Here’s a pleasing sight of neat clouds as I returned home from work on Nov. 28, 2018. It was just about 5 p.m. when I got the shot as I arrived at our home here in Naples, Fla.
I enjoy photographing clouds – even if it is just point-and-click from my car. I got this shot as I was driving in Naples, Fla., on Nov. 14, 2018.

I just recently posted a photo showing two contrails and then … bam! … I saw another pair on my way home from work here in Naples, Fla., on Dec. 4, 2018. OK, so it’s not a great example of contrails, but it is better than none at all.
Today is Dec. 7, 2018, and it was 77 years ago that the attack on the U.S. at Pearl Harbor brought our country into World War II. Trillions of words have been written about Pearl Harbor, but none will ever really capture the emotion of our nation on that day. Here’s a photo of the U.S. flag flying at half staff at the Collier County Public Library’s Headquarters branch here in Naples, Fla., on Dec. 2, 2018. It was flown that day in honor of former President George H.W. Bush, who died Nov. 30. However, flags are flown at half staff (or, half mast for ships at sea) in memory of Pear Harbor.
It was a serene sight of clouds illuminated by the rising sun on trash morning – notice the containers in front of my neighbor’s homes – as I went to work on Dec. 7, 2018, here in Naples, Fla.
I get a chance to photograph sunrises every day – doh! – but they don’t always look this good! Here’s the shot I got on Dec. 8, 2018, near our home here in Naples, Fla.
I had a wonderful morning on Dec. 11, 2018, as I saw a rainbow – click here to see it yourself – but first I saw this beautiful sunrise that was highlighted by its highlighting of a contrail.

Once again, I wanted to be on the beach because of a spectacular sunset! Here’s what I could see of it from our pool area on Dec. 17, 2018, at our home here in Naples, Fla.
At our home here in Naples, Fla., I saw the remnants of two contrails on Dec. 17, 2018.
What’s this? Rain on my windshield? It sure was as I was stopped for a red light here in Naples, Fla., on Dec. 20, 2018. A storm front moved through and brought what is currently a rare spot of rain to the region.
I couldn’t get a great shot of these American white ibis in our backyard here in Naples, Fla., on Dec. 9, 2018, but here’s what I could photograph. The birds were pecking around the ground for food during a light rain.
With the Christmas holiday postings, I’m a couple of days behind showing the recent full moon – and it was a great one! Can you pick out the moon? In this photo it is to the left of center – and is bigger than the two street lights near it! I got this shot on the night of Dec. 22, 2018.
With the Christmas holiday postings, I’m a couple of days behind showing the recent full moon – and it was a great one! I got this shot on the night of Dec. 22, 2018.
I don’t believe the Collier County Public Library cleans the courtyard fountain at the Headquarters branch by pouring soap into it. I hope no one tried the old “toss soap into a fountain to see the bubbles” because there just wouldn’t be enough agitation to create foam. Still, what other explanation is there? I got this shot on Dec. 22, 2018.
What’s better than a beautiful “red sky at morning?” One with a contrail that’s backlit by the rising sun. I got this shot of the morning and the contrail on Dec. 27, 2018, as I drove to work in our hometown of Naples, Fla.

Did you wonder why flags were still flying at half staff? Did you wonder why some were at half staff, but others were back up to their full height? Well, there’s an easy explanation: Flags were to be flown at half staff (mast on a ship) until sunset yesterday (Dec. 30, 2018) in honor of former President George H.W. Bush who passed away on Nov. 30. Apparently, many did not understand proper flag etiquette and brought flags back up too soon. However, as you can see from this photo I got Dec. 30, at the Collier County Public Library – Headquarters branch that the library and county government got it right.
After today – New Year’s Eve – it will be time to dispose of our Christmas tree of 2018, which has been up since the first week of December at our home here in Naples, Fla. It’s been a great tree and we’re having a couple of celebrations with friends and family today, so we’ve kept it up. However, the new year will see it for just one day!
Look closely: The U.S. flag in front of the Collier County Public Library – Headquarters branch is flying correctly on Jan. 2, 2018. As for the one in the foreground at the North Collier Government Center across the parking lot, it’s still at half staff. Some raised the flags too soon from half staff (they were under presidential order to be that way through sundown on Dec. 30) and now some have not raised them back. Too bad. Everyone should have proper respect for flag etiquette.
OK, so it wasn’t the greatest sunrise ever here in at our home in Naples, Fla. However, it’s pretty neat. I’ll take that for the morning of Jan. 3, 2019.
What a difference a morning makes. This photo shows sunrise on Jan. 6, 2019. Without clouds, it is beautifully ordinary! I got the shot at our home here in Naples, Fla.
What a difference a morning makes. This photo shows sunrise on Jan. 5, 2019. Super-neat clouds make for a great view. I got the shot at our home here in Naples, Fla.
I’ve been really blessed recently with seeing so many beautiful sunrises, sunsets and dusk settings. I was headed out to fill-up my car’s gas tank on Jan. 20, 2019, when I detoured to get this shot of dusk here in Naples, Fla. You can see a church steeple in the distance.
It’s always nice to see a sunrise coming with a beautiful cloud pattern. I got this shot with my iPhone on Jan. 23, 2019, as I left our home in Naples, Fla., to go to work.
The clouds on a dreary, wet and chilly Sunday morning in Naples, Fla., were an appropriate backdrop to flags flying at half-staff in honor of the five victims of the Sebring bank murders on Jan. 23, 2019. Flags were being flown appropriately at the Collier County Public Library – Headquarters branch, but across the parking lot, the flags at had not been lowered at the North Collier Government Center when I got this photo on Jan. 27.
I like this photo not because of the buzzard; not because of the sun; and not because of the flare in the lens of my iPhone that creates a neat design in the sky. I like it because of all the above! I got the shot Feb. 3, 2019, at our home here in Naples, Fla.
I can’t say that a commercial area is a good foreground to a wonderful sunrise, but here’s a photo with a Walmart and other buildings in front of it. I got the shot Feb. 10, 2019, near our home here in Naples, Fla.
OK, I’m a sucker for photographing sunrises – even if it is just point-and-shoot the ol’ iPhone out the window! I got this blazing sunrise coming up over Pelican Marsh Elementary School near our home here in Naples, Fla., on Feb. 11, 2019, as I headed to work.
It’s the weekend and I truly revel in beautiful sunrises. I was on my way to Publix on the early morning of Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, when I took a detour to photograph the sunrise. I got this one when I stopped at an intersection (obviously). What a way to start a weekend!

We’ve had beautiful views of a great full moon here in Naples, Fla. Here’s what it looked like early on the morning of Feb. 18, 2019. I got this shot as I went for a morning workout.

I had three different views of Feb. 21, 2019, here in Naples, Fla. Here is the second with neat-looking rain clouds moving in during the late afternoon as I drove home. All-in-all, a day of distinctive views!
I had three different views of Feb. 21, 2019, here in Naples, Fla. The first scene I enjoyed was this sunrise as I headed to work. All-in-all, a day of distinctive views!
I had three different views of Feb. 21, 2019, here in Naples, Fla. Here’s the last: I captured raindrops filtered through our pool cage screen and illuminated by the later afternoon sun! Look close because the raindrops are in focus, while the rest is not. All-in-all, a day of distinctive views!
The beautiful sunrises continued here in Naples, Fla., yesterday (Feb. 24, 2019). Here is another that looks like fire in the distance! I was running an early morning errand when I got this shot with my iPhone.

Was that a skywriter in the air over Naples, Fla., on Feb. 27, 2019? I got this shot of clouds with my iPhone during my lunch break, but then noticed when I edited the photos that it looks like a word formed in the clouds.
Despite it being the state of Florida’s official bird (no, the gesture in traffic is not that), the mockingbird isn’t one of my favorites. Here’s one perched on the upshot of my neighbor’s palm tree in Naples, Fla. I’m just not fond of the mockingbird.
See the tiny white spots in the center of this photo? That’s a beautiful waning crescent moon in the sky and a planet – possibly Venus, but I’m no astronomer – above it. Sadly, my iPhone couldn’t capture the true beauty of the moment (and my Nikon DSLR is on loan to a family member). I got this shot early in the morning of March 3, 2019, here at our home in Naples, Fla.
We’re back on Daylight Saving Time! Yes! This is how Southwest Florida should be year-round. This photo was talem on March 11, 2019. and shows the darkness at 7 a.m.at our home here in Naples, Fla.

I like the name Spring Equinox, but today (March 20, 2019) is what’s more commonly called the Vernal Equinox. We’re now in that final perfect time here in Southwest Florida in the run-up to starting the official Atlantic hurricane season on June 1. So, I’m looking for more weekend days to have a beautiful time on our patio enjoying some tea, reading, watching the tube and swimming in our pool here in Naples. I got this shot during an early start to the Vernal Equinox on March 17, 2019.
Deb got this photo of a cardinal that’s been visiting the bird feeder outside our patio in recent days. I’ve been trying, but never had the best angle. The photo was taken March 20, 2019, at our home here in Naples, Fla.
The signature steeple of the Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church‘s main building sets a nice tone for this photo I took just after sunrise on March 16, 2019, near our home here in Naples, Fla.
