On your home big screen: ‘Kelly’s Heroes’ is 52 today and just as good as in 1970

Looking on the big screen at your home today, “Kelly’s Heroes” is one of my all-time favorite flicks and today (June 23, 2022) is the 52nd anniversary of the U.S. premiere of the film – although a friend of mine celebrates a different day for his own reason. “Kelly’s Heroes” is set in World War II, but becomes a caper film by the soldiers going to rob a bank … but behind enemy lines (“the perfect crime”). However, filmmakers and producers also set “Kelly’s Heroes” up to be part comedy (it has WWII’s only hippie with Donald Sutherland) and really wanted it to be anti-establishment, as the film world did in 1970. “Kelly’s Heroes” as a film is diminished by these agendas, but it is still great and has a wonderful supporting cast with Sutherland, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O’Connor and Gavin MacLeod. “Kelly’s Heroes” is good in several parts, just not the complete film that it was striving to be 52 years ago. Still, it is one of my Top 10 all-time favorite flicks.

You won’t have any trouble finding “Kelly’s Heroes” for your “big screen” at home. Do me a favor and watch it … “Kelly’s Heroes” is worth the effort.
