Today’s “must” movie is “Thank You for Smoking.” Here is one of the five films that I rank as outstanding but-I-didn’t-see-at-the-premiere. “Thank You for Smoking” is a sensational motion picture that you need to see, unless you’re in the minority that has already seen it.
“Thank You for Smoking” is the story of the top public relations agent for the tobacco industry (Aaron Eckhart as “Nick Naylor”) before its downfall before Congress and paying out billions to the victims of smoking, but the movie is much more than that: It is a streamlined treatise on public relations and how public opinion is influenced by the media and advertising.
Eckhart is simply superb and “Thank You for Smoking” has an A-list set of supporting actors with Robert Duvall, Maria Bello, William H. Macy, Rob Lowe, David Koechner and J.K. Simmons doing superlative jobs in support of Eckhart. Along the way, Eckhart teaches his son how you don’t have to be right to win an argument (just show the other person is incorrect in some aspect of his or her argument) or that outright lying is a corporate way-of-life (as it remains today).
Of course, a bunch has changed on the landscape of PR and social media since “Thank You for Smoking” came out in 2006, but the principles behind obfuscation and lying-without-lying to the public will never change.
Make sure you go out of your way to watch “Thank You for Smoking.” You won’t be disappointed … I guarantee it!
