Today’s “must” movie is “The Hunter” starring Steve McQueen. Here’s a film to see so that you can measure mediocre films against a real stinker. I’m sad to note that “The Hunter” was McQueen’s last film before his untimely death at 50 in 1980 following cancer surgery.
“The Hunter,” which is the story of a real-life bounty hunter with a heart. However, you don’t need heart to watch “The Hunter,” you need a strong stomach. “The Hunter” is a dramatically bad movie that should have been on TV or, as we would later note, should have gone straight-to-video.
I’m sorry to say that McQueen, who is noted for tremendous work in films such as “The Cincinnati Kid” and “Bullitt,” really just mails in this effort. I’m not sure if he was physically affected by his medical condition at the time of “The Hunter,” but I don’t believe he’d ever want an excuse offered for one of his films.
Still, “The Hunter” is bad. Stone cold bad. The “acting” is acting in name only; the direction is non-existent; and, outside of two chase scenes, the production has that TV quality about it. You can’t even dredge up a glimmer of acting from “The Hunter’s” supporting cast, which is headed by LeVar Burton, Kathryn Harrold and Eli Wallach.
So, go it’s time to find “The Hunter” to see that some movies you thought were crap aren’t really that bad. You’ll find it somewhat educational … I guarantee it!
