Today’s “must” movie is actually two flicks: “Romancing the Stone” and its sequel “The Jewel of the Nile.” Here are two “action” flicks that actually have some plot and acting to go along with the action and you will have fun with each.
Both star Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. It’s a top-shelf cast in each and a decent performance from them in each film. Of course, “Romancing” as the original is best, but “Jewel” isn’t too terrible that you won’t enjoy it.
In “Romancing,” you meet Turner, who is a best-selling author trying to help her sister overcome bad guys in Colombia. Everyone is in search of a huge emerald (the “Stone”) and Turner hooks up with Douglas and they become quite the item as the film plays out. Again and of course, there are the usual stereotypes, but it all works out in the end of “Romancing” and it is a solid film.
“Jewel” came out in 1985, 18 months after “Romancing” made its debut in the spring of 1984. “Jewel” has Turner and Douglas headed for rocky romantic waters and a new adventure that turns up the “Jewel of the Nile.” The best plot twist is that the “Stone” was a jewel, while the “Jewel” was not a stone!
There is more “action” in “Jewel” than in “Romancing,” but you get an equal share of DeVito’s cutting, sarcastic and negative personality in each one. Danny is definitely the sparkplug to each film.
Ah, well, you can easily find “Romancing the Stone” and “The Jewel of the Nile.” The only thing stopping you is yourself. You’ll have a lot of fun watching them, I guarantee it!
