Always read the ‘fine print’ in an ad … from burgers to cars …

First, let me note that I’m not picking specifically on Arby’s in this commentary about the “fine print” on advertisements. The majority of companies take the same type of liberty, but I happened to find that this Arby’s commercial is a perfect example of folks needing to read the “fine print.” First, you will NOT get a 100-percent Wagyu burger at Arby’s with its Wagyu Steakhouse Burger (although most reviews are positive about the flavor). If you read the fine print in the TV ads (I got my photos by freezing frames on my DVR at our home here in Naples, Fla., on May 28, 2023), you’ll see that it is 51-percent American Wagyu beef and 49-percent ground beef and I inserted a

bigger version of the disclaimer in the big photo above and you can see both original photos at right. Well, that’s not a full-on Wagyu burger in my opinion … and certainly not of the true Wagyu beef that only comes from Japan or even Japanese-American stock. I will note at this point that Arby’s does put up the disclaimer. Here’s how Wiki describes “American” Wagyu: “In the United States, some Japanese Wagyu cattle are cross-bred with American Angus stock. Meat from this cross-breed is marketed as ‘American-Style Kobe Beef’, or ‘Wangus’, although many American retailers simply (inaccurately) refer to it as Wagyu. Wagyu were first competitively exhibited at the National Western Stock Show in 2012. Other U.S. Wagyu breeders have full-blooded animals directly descended from original Japanese bloodlines, that are registered through the American Wagyu Association.”

Still, I’d say it’s stretching it a bit to say a burger with only 51-percent American Wagyu should be called a “Wagyu” burger in the biggest type. I will also note that many online posts give a solid review of their experience with this Arby’s Wagyu Steakhouse Burger. So, remember that it is always “buyer beware” and buyer be informed from a fast-food menu to a car or to just about anything you purchase.
