Today’s “must” movie is “The In-Laws” from 1979 with Peter Falk and the late Alan Arkin. I’m recommending “The In-Laws” because it represents solid buddy-comedy and that I haven’t noted the June 2023 passing of Arkin on my blog.
“The In-Laws” is the story of the father of the bride-to-be (Arkin) and the father of the groom-to-be (Falk). Unfortunately, while the father of the bride-to-be is a popular dentist, the other guy is a CIA agent who’s engineering and helping complete the robbery of a U.S. Mint shipment. Of course, Falk uses his schmoozing ability to get Arkin to go all-in with him on the caper.
The two actors do a great job playing off one another and, despite their ongoing conflict and bickering, actually make “The In-Laws” a buddy flick. Now, do yourself a favor and don’t watch the vapid reboot of it from 2003 with Albert Brooks and Michael Douglas (or forget it if you’ve seen it). The reboot is dreck despite both Brooks and Douglas, who are usually give terrific performances.
You might have a little trouble in finding “The In-Laws” from 1979. Still, make the effort to check it out today! You won’t be disappointed. I guarantee it!
