Today’s “must” movie is “Semi-Tough” that is a football film starring Burt Reynolds and adapted from the late Dan Jenkins’ novel of the same title. “Semi-Tough” is the story of two star players (Reynolds and Kris Kristofferson) who live with the team owner’s daughter (a potty-mouthed Jill Clayburgh) in wonderful, platonic bliss. Well, platonic for just so long.
With the 2023 NFL season having just kicked off last night, you might choose a better film for the season (say the uneven “North Dallas Forty” or “Draft Day,” which is more fantasy football than a football movie). However, if you want to see self-help “gurus” punctured (and one thrown into a birdcage during a brawl at a church), then “Semi-Tough” will show you how to disparage them all.
Of course, there’s a storyline with “Semi-Tough,” but it really doesn’t matter. You’re watching Burt, Kris and Jill. The football scenes in “Semi-Tough” are amateurish beyond belief, but there’s a great pre-Super Bowl interview scene with Burt and Carl Weathers! You’ll also find a past villain from a “James Bond” film who causes Burt more pain than she ever did “007.”
You shouldn’t have much trouble finding “Semi-Tough,” but consider it carefully. You’ll probably be disappointed. I guarantee it!
