Today’s “must” movie is “American Flyers” with Kevin Costner. Here’s a bicycle-themed film that you don’t remember since it tanked at the box office, but it is one that you should see as soon as possible because it is simply great.
“American Flyers” is the story of brothers in a dysfunctional family because of a hereditary disease, but it is also what brings them together for the film. “American Flyers” also uses the name “flyers” correctly (a “flier” is a pilot or a handbill … only the uninformed used “flyer” as a handbill … a “flyer” used to be a train). The brothers are “flyers” on bicycles.
The story plays out pretty much in a stereotypical fashion, but “American Flyers” is elevated by Costner as well as David Marshall Grant (the brother – I liked him in “French Postcards,” too); Rae Dawn Chong (Costner’s girlfriend – she was also fun in “Commando” with Arnold Schwarzenegger); and Rebecca Paul (a hitchhiker who joins up and would later become a star on TV’s “Baywatch”).
It doesn’t get much better than this one despite the stereotypes.
So, find “American Flyers” so that you can experience a bicycle-brother drama and you’ll enjoy it. I guarantee it!
