Today’s “must” movie is “Fletch” and it is the rare example of taking a great novel and doing a good job onscreen with changes to key components of the original story. “Fletch” was the perfect vehicle for Chevy Chase and has lines that are repeated even today (“Moon River!”).
“Fletch” is a film adapted from a dramatic novel about a newspaper reporter who is not above … well, lying about himself. “Fletch” in both the novel and film takes on the character of characters, but the film does it over-the-top, while the novel by Gregory Mcdonald, was more laid-back, serious and with caustic, quiet humor than Chevy’s blunt impersonations and blustering personality.
In “Fletch,” you have a reporter who is chasing a story about drugs being sold on a southern California beach (can you believe it? 😊) but gets sidetracked when the “addict” he’s pretending to be on the beach is asked to kill a local businessman who, according to his story, is dying of cancer and wants a quick, painless way out.
Well, that leads “Fletch” to interesting scenes in a doctor’s office; a hospital; at a tennis club (several times) with the would-be victim’s wife and the underlying story of “drugs on the beach” (can you believe it? 😊).
You’ve seen the film (hopefully several times) and need to see it an additional several times. You will enjoy “Fletch,” I guarantee it!
