Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “The Gumball Rally.” It’s a movie about cars (and a van and a motorcycle) caught up in an “unofficial” coast-to-coast race. “The Gumball Rally” is one of my all-time favorite films!
BTW … the race in the film is patterned after the real-life Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash and while the “record” in the movie was 32 hours from New York to seaside California, the “unofficial record” in the real “unofficial” race is 25½ hours in 2021.
“The Gumball Rally,” which is far and away better than either of Burt Reynolds’ “Cannonball” movies (although his had a huge cast of named stars), has Michael Sarrazin battling his friend for supremacy in the rally and a young-ish Raul Julia and pre-real-life accident victim Gary Busey.
With “The Gumball Rally” you get cars. Lots of cars. Fast cars (except the Jaguar that won’t start). Also, you get a whacko on a motorcycle and a van with a large gas tank so the crew won’t have to spend time refueling (it winds up, of course, in a fireworks factory). Chasing them is a California cop who is dedicated to bringing them to justice (good luck).
“The Gumball Rally” is a somewhat easy one to find and you’ll enjoy it, even with its dark side … I guarantee it!
