Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “The Big Easy” with Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin. Here’s an interesting drama that could have also been purely a romance film from the law enforcement side of life.
Of course as the title tells you, “The Big Easy” takes place in New Orleans and you get Barkin as the newcomer-prosecutor who’s gonna root out corruption in the city’s police force. Then you have Quaid as a cop-somewhat-on-the-take who is the good guy in the story.
“The Big Easy’s” biggest component is a dark police drama that spins out a web of deceit and violence, but is framed through the heat of the passion between the two headliners. In one case, “The Big Easy” would have been a great romantic turn for Barkin and Quaid or an exceptional police drama. Together? A solid film, but doesn’t reach the height to which it was intended.
Of course, Barkin is cool to the point of freezing to Quaid as she gets to know him better, but ultimately does a 180-degree turn. For his part, Quaid does his own 180-degree turn and the two of them uncover an ongoing cancer within the police department that pretty much tears up everyone’s lives.
You get a solid supporting cast in “The Big Easy,” starting with Ned Beatty and John Goodman and wornderfully nice turns in small roles from Charles Ludham as an oily defense attorney (the actor died several months after the film’s premiere) and Lisa Jane Persky, who plays a detective on Quaid’s squad.
You’ll figure out what’s going on in “The Big Easy” early enough, but the film’s storyline is good and you will be kept guessing about a couple of angles until the climax.
You shouldn’t have any trouble finding “The Big Easy” and you’ll enjoy the chemistry between Barkin and Quaid … I guarantee it!
