Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “SpaceCamp.” Here is a quietly solid “kids” movie about NASA, youngsters wanting to go into space and an unintentional ride on the space shuttle.
It’s too bad that the tragedy of the Space Shuttle Challenger came five months before the release of the film in 1986. Very few people could get excited about a film in which a space shuttle is accidentally sent into orbit with one NASA astronaut on board with a bunch of youngsters who are her students at SpaceCamp.
I’m going the let my review tell part of “SpaceCamp’s” story:
“… it is a good, watchable film that doesn’t insult your intelligence and only makes you suspend some disbelief. “SpaceCamp” is a story involving space and NASA, kids, a snarky talking robot, some adult actors (Kate Capshaw and Tom Skerritt) and good young talent (Joaquin Phoenix, Lea Thompson and the late Kelly Preston) …
“… The predictable plot plays out to a predictable end, but you won’t mind. It’s a solid job. Not Olivier at the National Theatre, but a fun film that you’ll enjoy all these years after it was released.”
So, get off your sofa and find “SpaceCamp.” You’ll have a nice, fun time with it … I guarantee it!
