It’s movie time! Well, it’s TV time with the wonderful ‘The Love Boat’

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch not a movie but the wonderful, iconic and classic TV series “The Love Boat.” No, I don’t mean the TV movie that preceded the series, nor the dreck that followed as a sequel. I mean the one, the only … “The Love Boat!”

In case I need to jog your memory, where else could you find “The Brady Bunch’s” father falling in love with pop music star Toni Tennille? Or, where else would you find legendary comedian Billy Crystal as a “kissing bandit?” Or, where else would you find Tom Hanks as one character’s frat brother; Ethel Merman and Pearl Bailey as the mothers of two other main characters; of even see Jamie Lee Curtis work with her real-life mother Janet Leigh?

Of course, only on “The Love Boat!”

The stories each week were a little different, but all pretty much the same: people in or out of love falling in or our love and the crew of “The Love Boat” is the thread that ties it all together. You had “Capt. Merrill Steubing” (Gavin MacLeod); cruise director “Julie McCoy” (Lauren Tewes); “Dr. Adam Bricker” (Bernie Kopell); chief bartender “Isaac Washington” (Ted Lange); and purser “Burl ‘Gopher’ Smith” (Fred Grandy).

Each week you typically watched an episode with three distinct and different players: Each was its own story and, as I’ve already noted, the main characters are the thread in each. You would also have some up-and-coming stars; some then-current B-listers; and a plethora of older actors taking one final stroll in the spotlight.

Finally, I have to say that I most like that all the episodes of “The Love Boat” turn out well for the characters, except for maybe the terminally ill man on one cruise. It’s nice that you’ll be a bit uplifted as the closing credits roll.

I don’t know how you can find “The Love Boat” in streaming fashion today (I usually haul out the DVDs when it’s time to take a cruise), but it has been on some oldies networks and should be easy to find.

Don’t worry … “The Love Boat” is simply great and you’ll have a good laugh … I guarantee it!
