It’s movie time! ‘Adventures in Babysitting’ isn’t just for the ‘kids’

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Adventures in Babysitting.” Here’s a “kids” movie that is a total cut above and is watchable by an older audience, too. “Adventures in Babysitting” was Chris Columbus’ first effort in the director’s chair and the result reflects his talent.

You’ll remember Columbus better for the first two “Home Alone(s)” or “Mrs. Doubtfire,” but this one is nearly as good as those three classics and it stars Elisabeth Shue, who had been in “The Karate Kid” three years earlier.

In “Adventures in Babysitting,” Shue, as a high school student, gets stood-up on the dinner date of the anniversary with her less-than-faithful boyfriend and winds up taking a babysitting job that night.

Well and of course, things go haywire; she and a group of youngsters in her charge have to head from the suburbs into the big city of Chicago and get involved with all sorts of misfits from a strange tow-truck driver to a car thief to a car theft ring to a gang on an el-train a blues bar, a fraternity party and, in the film’s climax, scaling the side of a skyscraper.

Oh, and Shue gets mistaken for the then-current Playboy Playmate of the Month.

Naturally, this film is geared to a youthful audience.

In “Adventures in Babysitting,” you also get two great musicians with the late Albert “The Master of the Telecaster” Collins  and “Southside Johnny” Lyon and his “Asbury Jukes.” Collins forces Shue and the youngsters to sing before they can slide out of a club they happen into and Shue and gang sees “Southside Johnny” perform at the frat party.

Well, naturally and of course, all’s well that ends well for Shue and the gang.

If you want some laughs and a little drama, check out “Adventures in Babysitting” again. You’ll totally enjoy it … I guarantee it!
