It’s movie time! ‘Father Goose’ is a interesting comedy-drama set in WWII

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Father Goose” from 1964 with Cary Grant and Leslie Caron. Here’s a mostly funny flick with a little combat tossed in that will make your day.

“Father Goose” is a comedy-drama set at the beginning of World War II. Grant is a U.S. ex-pat in the Pacific at the start of the war. He’s only concerned about himself and the developing war appears nothing more than an annoyance to him. He’s interested pretty much in two things: himself and booze.

Moving right along with “Father Goose,” Grant is blackmailed by a British officer into becoming a “coastwatcher,” which were men stationed in a string of islands being conquered by the Japanese. They had a radio and reported ship and aircraft movement.

Continuing right along, Grant winds up shepherding a group of children and their confident, cocky and rigid schoolmistress back to his island after being sent to another atoll to rescue a coastwatcher, who wound up being killed by the Japanese.

Of course, “Father Goose” is mostly the story of their relationship from the rockiest of beginnings to all’s well ending … although there are many comedic points in between, as well as drama from the war. Caron does a magnificent job ignoring just about everything Grant says or demeaning everything he does (except in combat).

So, check out “Father Goose.” It’s a nice, family-friendly ride with a screen legend … I guarantee it!
