Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time tonight, let’s watch the great tee-vee miniseries “Noble House” from 1988 and starring Pierce Brosnan. “Noble House” is the story of a Hong Kong-based trading company, its “Tai-Pan” (CEO) in Brosnan and a variety of challenges it must overcome to survive.
“Noble House” is taken from the expansive novel of the same name by the late James Clavell and is really well-executed in filtering down this epic of Asia from more than 1,000 pages in print. Brosnan heads a solid cast, but you don’t get any A-listers for this one with Denholm Elliott, John Rhys-Davies and John Houseman being both the best actors in supporting roles as well as the “names” you might recognize.
It’s interesting to note that the novel “Noble House” takes place in 1963, but the miniseries takes place in the late 1980s as China was near to repossessing the Crown Colony of Hong Kong. I would have liked to have seen a period piece set in the 1960s, but the producers did a good job transforming the story to a (then) modern setting for the 1988 release.
As “Ian Dunross,” Brosnan does his best upper-crust Brit (even though he’s an Irishman) in “Noble House” and no matter the travail or what’s happening at the moment, you just know that he will prevail over anything with his suave sophistication, brutal persona and an air of invincibility.
The late Deborah Raffin and the late Ben Masters play the Americans who come to Hong Kong to exploit the financial crisis being brought on by the looming takeover by the Communists.
OK, then! I don’t know how you might find “Noble House” because I have it on DVD and don’t need to go searching for it, but it will be well worth your time … I guarantee it!
