Boo! It’s that time of the year again as Halloween 2024 is only a few days away!
For my annual recommendations of horror films, I’m separating the recommendations into genres … and today we’re again looking at: Vampires!
I’ve reviewed a number of films with a theme of vampires and you’ll find most chilling and horrifying.
So, here goes in alphabetical order in my second of two posts about films with vampires (obviously, click the link in the movie title to read my review):
‘The Lost Boys’ … Horror coefficient: A
(1987; 97 minutes; rated R; directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Jason Patric, Corey Haim and Diane Wiest)
Here is a vampire film that perfectly blends horror with style! It came out with young vampires who were cool-looking, acted cool and were ravenous for violence and bloodletting. Enter a couple of kids moving to a beachside town and the older brother gets sucked into the clan, while the younger hooks up with a couple of teenaged “vampire hunters.” It’s all good with this one and I’m sure you’ve seen it if you’re a fan of horror flicks.
‘The Night Stalker’ … Horror coefficient: A+
(1972; 74 minutes; rated NR; directed by John Llewellyn Moxie and starring Darren McGavin, Carol Lynley and Simon Oakland)
Here is my all-time favorite vampire flick and it was an original “made-for-TV” film starring the late Darren McGavin. In 1972, it set a record for viewership of a TV movie and so it has very little gore, but lots and lot of scares. The vampire is introduced to you piecemeal and a shudder goes through you when you first see just his eyes! Frankly, even without the gore, you won’t find a better vampire flick than this one!
‘Salem’s Lot’ (1979) … Horror coefficient: A+
(1979; 112 minutes; rated PG; directed by Tobe Hooper and starring James Mason, David Soul and Lance Kerwin)
Here’s my second all-time favorite vampire flick and it, too, is a “made-for-TV” movie. It is taken from (naturally) a Stephen King novel and brought to the small screen by legendary horror director Tobe “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” Hooper and it is about a writer who returns to his hometown to find it decaying from inside … and it’s all because a vampire is coming to town and the creature’s familiar has established initial roots. This film has a bunch of great vampire scenes from the creepy mansion to a morgue and it’ll chill you! Here again is a simply excellent film about a vampire. BTW … Hooper also made the supernatural horror flick “Poltergeist.”
Come back tomorrow for the second post of my recommendations about horror flicks with zombies …
