For this year, I’m going with the reminder of the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s check out “The Big Fix” with Richard Dreyfuss from 1978, Here’s one where you get a big dose of 1960s-70s radicalism as the foundation for a whodunit murder-mystery story.
“The Big Fix” is about a former radical-turned private detective who gets drawn into a political plot when a woman he reunites with is killed. Dreyfuss is funny in his quips and one-liners mocking everything and every one, but you’ll have to follow the plot closely to keep up with the intricate storyline.
In “The Big Fix,” Dreyfuss is hired to find out who’s trying to sabotage a politician’s campaign for re-election and he finds himself immersed in the past (with a couple of radicals still behind bars and their “hippie” lawyer or an Abby Hoffman-type radical who has turned into an advertising executive) as much as the present.
After Dreyfuss, you’ll get in smaller roles a young(ish) Bonnie Bedelia, Susan Ansbach and F. Murray Abraham. All of them do good work, but this is Dreyfuss’ showcase to shine … and he does!
If you want to take a somewhat noir look down memory lane for those old enough to appreciate the radicalism of students in the 1960s and ’70s, then “The Big Fix” is for you! I’m not sure if it’s easy to find even in today’s streaming world because I have it on DVD. So, find it … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
