Today, May 26, is Memorial Day 2025. I’m reprising my annual blog entry for Memorial Day and recommend that you watch any film that highlights the sacrifices of the armed forces of the United States. In short, today is our national holiday to honor those who lost their lives in service to our country and therefore maintain the freedoms that are the envy of the world.
The sacrifice of the fallen is a debt that must always be honored and remembered, but can never repaid because these Americans paid for our freedom with the ultimate coin: their lives. So, today, let’s take more than a few moments to reflect the true meaning of this holiday because some of our soldiers continue to make the ultimate sacrifice each year. Here are some links …
- The history of Memorial Day, which many still call “Decoration Day”
- The history of Memorial Day from the Department of Veterans Affairs
- The history of Memorial Day from History.com
- “Memorial Day: A commemoration” from the National Archives
Here are the links to all the war-centric films that I’ve reviewed for my blog that have the United States at the center of the story. There are a couple of films that have a comedy component, but I’m including them because of their dramatic contribution and in no way making war or Memorial Day a laughing matter (just as I’m including fictional as well as one sci-fi movie involving World War II):
VIETNAM
‘Full Metal Jacket’
COLD WAR
‘The Bedford Incident’
SCI-FI
‘The Final Countdown’
WORLD WAR II:
