On this Fourth of July – the United States’ Independence Day – we should continue the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! because it helps show that independence comes in the form of cinema, too. Just take “All the President’s Men.” It celebrates the First Amendment and the fact that journalism is a key component to our freedom.
“All the President’s Men” is a film that should resonate with all Americans: It shows how truth ultimately triumphs in the face of outlandishly crooked and lying public officials and being called the “fake news” of its day.
“All the President’s Men” is the story of the reporting on the Watergate scandal that toppled President Richard Nixon in the mid-1970s. Of course, there are those today who want to scuttle the First Amendment and crassly vilify good reporting as “fake news.” “All the President’s Men” today is the telling of a story of great, factual reporting – something that’s nearly completely lost today in a two-pronged onslaught of incompetent “journalists” and owners of news outlets that treat it more as entertainment than having any journalistic standard that’s joined by politicians and others who cry “fake news” at the drop of a hat.
So, on this Fourth of July 2025, celebrate and honor our nation’s independence and our citizens’ First Amendment rights with a viewing of “All the President’s Men.” We’re in a streaming day and you can easily find it … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
