We’ve begun summer of 2025 in earnest and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s journey back to 1980 for the caper film “How to Beat the High Cost of Living” with a trio of stars: Susan Saint James, Jane Curtain and Jessica Lange.
Although a caper film where the women plan and rob a shopping mall, “How to Beat the High Cost of Living” is more of a treatise on the state of women at the time: How they were having to come out of a “housewife” shell and fend for themselves. Although stereotypical in many ways, the film doesn’t insult your intelligence (too much) and is a fun look back at 25+ years ago.
“How to Beat the High Cost of Living” focuses on three women who each have a financial challenge in life. The only one out of touch with reality today is the rich woman (played by Lange) whose antiques shop, which is financed by her doctor husband, is forced to close because it loses money. Ha! In today’s world, they’d just declare bankruptcy in her LLC and laugh all the way to re-opening the shop.
The robbery is of a large sphere at the mall filled with currency. It is a promotion for the mall and the women find a way to get the money out while everyone is watching! Of course, things go wrong and Curtain has to do a striptease on stage to get folks’ attention away from the sphere! Don’t get your hopes up as a body double was used.
In any case, we’re in a streaming day and you can easily find “How to Beat the High Cost of Living” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
