Hooray for Hollyweird! ‘Happy Gilmore’ among the best golf flicks; sequel drops July 25

We’ve begun summer of 2025 in earnest and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s take a look at “Happy Gilmore” today because its sequel drops on Amazon Prime tomorrow (Friday, July 25, 2025).

“Happy Gilmore” is one of the more notable golf movies and stars Adam Sandler in the title role. I write “notable” because there are few golf movies worth watching. “Tin Cup” with Kevin Costner is one from the same year as “Happy Gilmore,” but it is a terribly weak and disappointing film and, outside of the greatest golf movie ever (“Caddyshack”), “Happy Gilmore” is miles ahead of it.

With “Happy Gilmore” you get Sandler as an angry, volcanic hockey player who can’t find a hockey team that will have him. However, he discovers that he can hit a golf ball a country mile with his hockey, slap shot-like golf swing. He needs money to buy back his grandmother’s house (she has paid taxes … well, ever) and begins scoring a few bucks at a driving range hitting 400-yard drives to previously disbelieving golfers.

He gets taken under his wing by a one-armed black golf pro (Carl Weathers) who said “they” wouldn’t let him play on tour. Sandler replies, “Aw, I’m sorry, because you’re black?” “Hell, no. Darned alligator bit my hand off,” he snaps as he reveals a wickedly obvious fake wooden hand.

And so “Happy Gilmore” ultimately winds up on the “pro tour” and becomes the nemesis of “Shooter McGavin,” who is the touring pro flavor-of-the-day … and he doesn’t want “Happy” to continue stealing his thunder.

Well, you can take it from there. “Happy Gilmore” has a nice fight scene between himself and iconic game show host Bob Barker (“The price is wrong, bitch!”) and a host of other funnies.

Now, I look forward to seeing what Sandler will bring out with the sequel. We’re in a streaming day and you can easily find “Happy Gilmore” … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
