We’ve begun the downturn of summer of 2025 and I’m continuing the fractured phrase: Hooray for Hollyweird! Most of us love movies and I enjoy recommending what you should watch on any given day. So, Hooray for Hollyweird … and for today’s recommendation, let’s take a look at “The Guns of Navarone” and I consider it the best motion picture about World War II that you can find.
“The Guns of Navarone” isn’t a “combat” film such as “Battle of the Bulge” or the late Sam Peckinpah’s “Cross of Iron” but, somewhat similar to “Saving Private Ryan,” it relies on acting and storytelling to make it’s point. Interesting note: “The Guns of Navarone” was supposed to be an “anti-war” film, but manages to stay near the top of all “war movie” discussions.
The story of “The Guns of Navarone” is simple: a British commando unit is formed to destroy two “impregnable” cannons in an Aegean promitory. The cannons couldn’t be destroyed by conventional means, so the group, including acting legends Gregory Peck, David Niven and Anthony Quinn, is sent in to do what the conventional military couldn’t achieve.
However, it is the interplay between characters; the backstory for each; and the forward movement after Peck takes over command of the unit that makes this film so special. The supporting cast is solid and you’ll need to stay awake to follow all the subterfuge involved in the mission.
“The Guns of Navarone” is easy to find in this streaming day and you will enjoy it … and then you’ll definitely say … “Hooray for Hollyweird!”
