Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, for today, let’s go with a can’t-miss comedy: “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” from 1988 with Steve Martin and Michael Caine as competing scammers with completely different styles and temperaments, but who have been brought together by circumstance.
It’s not easy for a director to manage to showcase two major stars, but Frank Oz does a marvelous job with “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” by managing to make sure that Caine and Martin manage to appear to dominate the film. What is dominant is that the duo make for comedy magic in this one.
In “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” you have Caine as the suave sophisticate who charms rich women out of their money through a variety of stories. Then, Martin stumbles into his world with the panache of a bull in a china shop. (Remember china shops? Remember that old saying? 😊)
The heart of “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” is the two pursuing the fortune of Glenne Headly and they make a bet as to which one will be successful in taking her to the proverbial cleaners. (Remember that old saying? 😊)
Each of the men’s antics is hilarious from Martin’s over-the-top character of “Ruprecht” the “Monkey Boy” to a military man in a wheelchair to Caine posing as an internationally famous psychiatrist to “cure” Martin. Watching it all is Headley and she’s impressed by both.
Who wins? Well, you’ve probably seen “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” so I’m not going to spoil the surprise for those who haven’t.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and find “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” which can be found on a variety of streaming services. Find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later.
