Ticket to the Movies: ‘Back to the Beach’ is nothing but sand-filled fun!

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK … the other day I recommended “Weekend at Bernie’s” as we start gearing up for beach season and today I’m going with a much more beach-centric film with “Back to the Beach” with those beach/surfing icons Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello.

“Back to the Beach” the 20 years-or-so later sequel to the couples’ classic surfer flicks from the 1960s and is simply marvelous because just about the entire cast will be recognized from old television shows and B-list movie fame.

Among those you’ll recognize (somewhat) immediately:

  • TV’s “Leave it to Beaver” is well-represented with Barbara Billingsley (“Mrs. Cleaver” on TV), Tony Dow (“Wally”) and Jerry Mathers (“The Beaver”) as the surf contest’s announcer and two judges.
  • For both top stars of TV’s “Gilligan’s Island,” this would be their last feature film. Bob “Gilligan” Denver plays “The Bartender” and Alan “The Skipper” Hale Jr. plays “Bartender’s Buddy,” who comes at the end to take Denver on a “three-hour tour.”
  • Guitarist Dick Dale was back on the beach, too, and this time also has Stevie Ray Vaughn with him. Dale does a song (“California Sun”) with Avalon and then is on dual guitars with Vaughn for “Pipeline.”
  • Paul Reubens is billed here as “Pee-Wee Herman” and plays himself (watch those puns, now) and sings his version of the “Surfin’ Bird” song.
  • Edd Byrnes (another “Grease” veteran) plays the “Valet” while TV’s “Maxwell Smart” from “Get Smart,” Don Adams, plays the “Harbor Master” who gives the gang a permit for a beach party (get it?).

As for the plot of “Back to the Beach,” well, who cares? 😊 It’s Frankie and Annette on the beach again!

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and you can find “Back to the Beach” is most often available for rent or purchase on streaming services, but sometimes makes an appearance on some without a rental fee. I hope you’ve seen “Back to the Beach,” so find it! Watch it! Don’t worry, you’ll thank me later for “Back to the Beach.”
