My family is tolerant of my sometimes hobby of assembling models of military tanks. They believe such an endeavor isn’t something for someone of my age, much less that I place the models on a bookshelf or my desk. I was working on my latest project his morning (Wednesday, April 8, 2026) when I grabbed this shot at our home here in Naples, Fla. The model is from the exceptional model company Tamiya of a Russian heavy tank, which was originally named the JS-3 for the murderous dictator Josef Stalin, but later renamed as the IS-3 for the spelling “Iosif Stalin.” The tank was designed in 1944 and variants have seen service by Communist countries and their allies across the globe for longer than seven decades. One was even used in service in the 2014 conflict between the Russians and Ukrainians! (Remember: Click on the small image for a bigger version – then click on that one for the full-size photo.)
