Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s delve into the dark, politicized world of director Costa-Gavras and his film “Betrayed” about an infiltration of a white supremacist group by the FBI. “Betrayed” stars Debra Winger as the undercover FBI agent and Tom Berenger as the leader of a Midwest group of white supremacists.

“Betrayed” has violence, but the most uncomfortable parts of the film are more the philosophy and underlying motivations of the group and the shadowy figure to whom it ultimately reports. From the initial scene of the murder of a Jewish talk show host to children repeating horrible comments that they’ve been taught to the beginning of a “hunt” where a kidnapped black man is chased by group members armed with automatic weapons and their dogs, “Betrayed” isn’t an easy film to watch.

In the end, the most obvious play on words is the film’s title, since both main characters find themselves betrayed – the bad guy by the woman he is fooled into believing she loves him and the FBI agent by her own emotional experience in the case.
Both Winger and Berenger do superlative work and the less-than-A-list supporting cast does a great job in making sure “Betrayed” is great cinema. You get the menace of Jeffrey DeMunn as the shadowy national organizer; John Mahoney as the farmer-turned-supremacist who dislikes violence and has to “close my eyes every time I pull the trigger.”
“Betrayed” is loosely based on a real-life supremacist group called “The Order” and Costa-Gavras uses analogies in images as well as violence itself and spoken words to deliver a philosophical gut punch to the audience. Unlike as he did six years earlier with “Missing” starring Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek, Costa-Gavras doesn’t use real names in “Betrayed” and compresses events to fit the frame he’s chosen for the film.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and, if you dare, watch “Betrayed.” It is available several subscription services as well as being offered for rent on other streaming platforms. You might thank me later when you watch “Betrayed” today!
