Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s hit a total classic today starring the legendary Humphrey Bogart: “The Caine Mutiny.” It is from 1954 and is in color and set during World War II. “The Caine Mutiny” has a sterling supporting cast that includes Jose Ferrer, Van Johnson and, in a different kind of role from you’d believe of him, Fred MacMurray.

“The Caine Mutiny” is the story of a U.S. Navy ship outside of the action in WWII in the Pacific. The crew is undisciplined, although veteran of several major landings; the skipper is coasting; and everyone appears to not give much of a damn any longer.
Enter Bogart as “Capt. Queeg.”

Bogie immediately lets the crew know that he’s a “by the book” officer and begins a series of petty incidents with the ship’s officers and crew. It doesn’t take long for everyone to come to be against him. MacMurray, who’s not the loving father in this one, undermines everything and everyone with his cynicism.

“The Caine Mutiny” is a showcase for Bogart, but also a showcase for Johnson, who’s the executive officer and true leader of the crew. “The Caine Mutiny” earned seven Oscar nominations, but inexplicably didn’t win any.

“The Caine Mutiny” culminates in a court-martial trial of Johnson after he took over command from Bogart during a hair-raising typhoon. Ferrer becomes Johnson’s attorney and, while delivering for Johnson, manages to set everyone straight about the true nature of the “mutiny.”
The film is, at its heart, a morality play pitting the internal demons of Bogart against the trying-to-do-good of Johnson and all set up by the malodorous underlying personality of MacMurray.
No one who enjoys classic American cinema should miss “The Caine Mutiny.” From direction to acting to details in the production, the film is near cinematic perfection.
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and make sure you watch “The Caine Mutiny.” It is available in mid-2026 via the Netflix subscription service as well as being offered for rent on other streaming platforms. You will definitely thank me later when you watch “The Caine Mutiny” today!
