Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s check back to a much slower pace and go “glacial” with “Local Hero.” By “glacial,” I mean this is a movie from the United Kingdom … Scotland in this case … and it isn’t just slow moving, but it is “glacial” in its pace. However, it is totally endearing and is a must-see for everyone, so, “glacial” is a compliment, not a criticism.

“Local Hero” is truly outstanding. It is the story of a U.S. company that wants, in secret, to buy a town in Scotland for oil operations in the North Sea. Of course, only top executives of the company believe it is secret – everyone else is in the know and it’s just how much the town can get out of the company to enrich everyone that is the soul of the story.

I’ll write it straightforwardly: “Local Hero” isn’t the film everyone will want to watch. It was initially chosen by a group of my friends to play as the “awful” flick on a New Year’s Eve. However, “Local Hero” struck a chord in my heart and I’ve talked (and written) it up for years.
Burt Lancaster heads the “name” in the film, but the supporting cast from Denis Lawson as the town’s guiding force and the wonderful character played by Norman Chancer as Lancaster’s psychiatrist … and he is the only actor to raise his voice in the film (see, “glacial”) and leaves a profane note in individual letters on Lancaster’s penthouse skylight.

Of course, things go haywire in “Local Hero” through a serene, intellectual beach dweller; Lawson’s hot-blooded wife (OK, so it’s a mild simmer); an odd corporate executive who loves astronomy (Lancaster) and he finds and embraces that the town is perfect for an observatory and marine research facility; and townsfolk in on the secret but don’t let on to the company executive on the ground.
Whew! For a “glacial” film, there’s a lot going on!
So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Local Hero.” It is available on several subscription services or to rent or buy on a variety of streaming services. You will thank me later for “Local Hero.”
