Ticket to the Movies: ‘Just One of the Guys’ better than you’d imagine

Welcome back to my blog. Here’s my recommendation of a movie to check out today and hope you punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” OK, let’s go with the little-remembered “Just One of the Guys” and a girl going “undercover” as a guy to write a story for her high school newspaper (remember when they allowed those as well as cross-dressing was a component in comedy cinema?).

“Just One of the Guys” isn’t a very good film, but it is watchable and “watchable” isn’t something many films can offer today. As for “isn’t a very good film” is what you expect. Besides, Joyce Heyser as “Terri/Terry Griffith” is OK, but she was a bit mature to be playing a high school junior (she was 28 at the film’s premiere). Still, you’ll enjoy her transformation and let the hilarity ensue.

In “Just One of the Guys,” Heyser is pursing a career in journalism (remember when that meant something?) and decides to go to a rival high school … as a boy and write about the experience. The plot is mildly interesting, although somewhat formulaic and offers too many stereotypes, but the cast manages to avoid a few pitfalls and you’ll enjoy watching this one.

Be ready for the stereotypes in “Just One of the Guys” because you get … a BMOC who’s a bully; dim high school students; the friendship with a guy that twists everything around; and the saccharine ending that you saw coming even in the opening credits.

Heyser, who spelled her last name “Heiser” as one half of the “Iron Box Twins” in the laught-fest of “The Hollywood Knights,” keeps the film running on an even keel – again, an accolade in today’s world of cinema with little purpose. Heyser was also in “Valley Girl” and “This is Spinal Tap.”

So, I say punch your “Ticket to the Movies!” and watch “Just One of the Guys.” It is available on several subscription services or to rent or buy on a variety of streaming services. You will thank me later for “Just One of the Guys.”
