Jack Webb would have jailed closed captioning for it making this many errors

I guess that the iconic cop show “Dragnet” offers the worst examples of errors in closed captioning. You can see a number of examples in my posts about CC errors and today here’s yet another one: Harry Morgan, playing “Officer Bill Gannon” says running into a suspect would be like shaking hands with a “violin spider.” Naturally, closed captioning screws it up by translating it to “violent spider.” Sigh. What dummies. If you didn’t know, a violin spider (better known as a recluse spider) is quite poisonous. Of course, closed captioning most likely can spell “ignorant” and “stupid,” but I’m guessing it’s more the fault of incompetent voice recognition software. Ah well, in any case, dumb is dumb and this shouldn’t happen. I took this photo at our home here in Naples, Fla., on Jan. 19, 2021, while playing a re-run of the “Dragnet” episode “Mister” from October 1969. And you can click here for all my posts about errors in closed captioning … (Remember: Click on the small image for a bigger version – then click on that one for the full-size photo.)
