Watch It! I usually use an anniversary of World War II to suggest a WWII movie, but I’ll go today with “The Great Escape.” We’re just past the 77th anniversary of the real “Great Escape” (it took place over the late night and very early morning of March 24-25, 1944), but the movie is one of those big-screen, big-cast spectaculars that were common in the 1960s and so wonderful to watch. The story of “The Great Escape,” which was released in 1963, is about a group of allied fliers and airmen who tunneled out of a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp. It has a basis in fact, but, since two of the biggest stars in “The Great Escape” play Americans (Steve McQueen and James Garner), you’ll have to understand that it isn’t all factual to the last detail. In any case, it is a classic war film and has just about everyone who was anyone in Hollywood at the time. So, “The Great Escape” is easy to find, so just go and … Watch It!
