Watch It! “The Late Shift” is the story of the early 1990s war over late night TV and who would succeed the legendary Johnny Carson. More importantly, “The Late Shift” is an early HBO movie and part of the vanguard of the coming making of movies by “TV” companies. “The Late Shift” is simply terrific, with an Oscar-worthy performance by Kathy Bates (but, she wasn’t eligible because it was a TV movie). The actors who play David Letterman and Jay Leno in “The Late Shift” do a workmanlike job each, but neither manages to elevate the character. So, watch it for Kathy and a few other supporting actors. “The Late Shift” … Watch It!
