Here’s yet another example of how casual folks were about talking about beating children back-in-the-day. On some (mostly crime) TV shows, “good” parents showing “discipline” would talk about “whipping” or taking a belt to their children who had misbehaved. In today’s day and age, such a comment by a parent is more linked to abuse than the discipline inferred in the TV shows of long ago. Here’s a screenshot of an episode of “Adam-12” (“Pot Shot:” Season 7, Episode 12 from Jan. 14, 1975). The actor’s boys have been bad, so he didn’t bother to talk to them and took a belt to them. I took this photo off our TV screen on Aug. 21, 2021, at our home here in Naples, Fla.
