On your home big screen: ‘Max Dugan Returns’ is simply film excellence

Looking on the big screen at your home today, you must try “Max Dugan Returns” simply because it is a great flick. “Max Dugan Returns” is the only “flop” from noted playwright and screen writer Neil Simon, but it’s only a flop in numbers: This is a wonderful, endearing film that you need to see (or see again). “Max Dugan Returns” is the story of a high school teacher played by Marsha Mason, with a son (Matthew Broderick in his film debut), who finds herself entwined with a cop and her estranged father (played to simple perfection by Jason Robards), who has just stolen a bunch of money from the mob in Las Vegas. Forget the story, “Max Dugan Returns” is a character-driven slice of movie excellence.
