Here I am again. It’s a special day in the year that doesn’t involve family. “The Day of the Jackal” is the novel and today is the 59th anniversary of the climactic day of the story. It is the first novel that I truly enjoyed as a teenager and the movie is just as good – actually, it’s the gold standard for translating a novel to the big screen. “The Day of the Jackal” is the movie I always watch on each year’s Aug. 25. It is the day from 1963 in the novel on which the film is based. “The Day of the Jackal” is the story of an assassin and his plans to kill French President Charles DeGaulle. It is a perfect example of how to translate an intricate novel to the big screen. “The Day of the Jackal” doesn’t star an A-list of actors, but each does a wonderful job and director Fred Zinnemann is just perfect in bringing “The Day of the Jackal” to the cinema. So, on this 58th anniversary of “The Day of the Jackal” … get out there today and it’s a great film for your big screen.
