Today’s “must” movie is “Murph the Surf.” Here’s a 1970s flick about a bad-boy beach bum who becomes an internationally celebrated jewel thief. “Murph the Surf” is the story of Jack “Murph the Surf” Murphy as seen through the eyes of his partner in crime. “Murph the Surf” is long on trying to be “cool” and comes up a bit short on facts.
However, just as it isn’t a documentary, “Murph the Surf” is a lot of fun to watch despite its cheesy production values. It stars the simply terrific Robert Conrad and Don Stroud as the title character. It is Conrad’s character that is the brains and true brass behind the dynamic duo, according to real-life screenwriter and convicted crook Allan Kuhn.
In real life, the two (along with two others, but you won’t see them in this film) left South Florida’s beach scene, went to New York and stole the Star of India sapphire as the biggest hit in their haul. It was the biggest jewel heist ever at the time and propelled “Murph the Surf” into the international spotlight.
Unfortunately, life isn’t a movie and you won’t see how the real Murphy was accused of later murdering one woman and then convicted of murdering another. He was let out of prison after serving less than 20 years at the behest of prominent folks including NFL superstar Roger Staubach. Murphy found religion in prison and spent the rest of his life involved in prison ministries.
If you can find “Murph the Surf” (it’s sometimes titled “Live a Little, Steal A Lot”), make sure you make time to watch it … seeing south Florida in the 1970s is a nice ride down memory lane for those who were there, I guarantee it!
