Today’s “must” movie is “Middle Age Crazy” with Bruce Dern and Ann-Margaret. Here’s a simply wonderful comedy-drama that you cannot find on DVD or Blu-Ray or on Comcast, so look for a VHS (yes, I wrote “VHS”) to enjoy this really funny and poignant motion picture.
Dern is turning 40 and becomes “Middle Age Crazy.” There are stereotypes that abound, but this film manages to make them actually funny to watch (such as when Dern fantasizes what he would say if he was giving his son’s high school graduation speech) and they are not potholes in the plot.
What you get with “Middle Age Crazy” is wonderful acting from Dern, Ann-Margaret and just about the entire supporting cast – especially Graham Jarvis, who plays Dern’s best friend and says everything that is off-color, non-PC and absolutely hysterical.
In the end, “Middle Age Crazy” becomes a dark drama because of Dern’s infidelity and his son’s fertility, but the film makes a perfect segue from comedy to drama and you know you’re watching an excellent film.
You’ll probably not find “Middle Age Crazy,” but don’t let that deter you. Check with friends who still have VHS tapes and maybe some day, “Middle Age Crazy” will find its way to the cloud or at least 4K digital disk.
