Today’s “must” movie should be about D-Day in World War II since today is June 6, 2023, and it is the 79th anniversary of D-Day: The allied invasion of Normandy in France against the German army in Europe. One way to honor the sacrifice of the nearly 30,000 U.S. soldiers who died in the overall invasion campaign is through a film … and there are a number of excellent films about the D-Day landings. I first wrote about the D-Day anniversary in 2014, which was the inaugural year of my blog.
You’ll find big-screen blockbusters with huge casts and just about the best is the HBO miniseries about a U.S. Army unit that trains for and participates in D-Day.
With being at the 79th anniversary of the D-Day campaign, we’ve taken yet another step in seeing the passing of the generation that won the war. As of today, June 6, 2023, online reports note approximately 167,000 U.S. veterans of WWII are alive.
As a campaign, more U.S. soldiers died in the Normandy landings and subsequent battles to break out from the invasion area (29,204) than any other single campaign. It was 3,000 more fallen than from Meuse-Argonne offensive in World War I (26,277) or the Battle of the Bulge in WWII (19,276).
You won’t have any trouble finding films about D-Day, so go find one! You won’t be disappointed. I guarantee it!
