Today’s “must” movie is “Magnum Force” and it is the first sequel to Clint Eastwood’s iconic cop thriller “Dirty Harry.” “Magnum Force” is the only truly watchable of the four sequels and it carries a message that resonates today in the year that it will turn 50 on Dec. 25.
“Magnum Force” is a story of vigilantes cleansing San Francisco of criminal slime. However, Eastwood’s “‘Dirty Harry’ Callahan” is for real law and order, not vigilantes being judge, jury and executioner. The key to
the film is who is doing the killing: they’re rough; they’re tough; and they’re very, very good at violence.
I’m sure there are those who will dismiss “Magnum Force” because of “Dirty Harry” and Eastwood, but there’s one scene where Eastwood points out that if vigilantes get there way, then neighbors will be shooting each other because their dogs went on their lawn. Unfortunately and regrettably, we as a society today have made that no longer a prediction or premonition.
With “Magnum Force,” you also get a solid supporting cast with Mitchell Ryan, Hal Holbrook and a group of young cops headed by David Soul and Tim Matheson. Hey, you even get Suzanne Somers topless in a pool scene, but she is uncredited for it.
You shouldn’t have any trouble in finding “Magnum Force.” So, check it out today! You won’t be disappointed. I guarantee it!
