Today’s ‘must see’ movie: ‘Local Hero’ is filled with serenity (and that’s a good thing)

Today’s “must” movie is “Local Hero.” You definitely did not see this one, but you should … it offers serenity; absolutely no “action;” and it takes at least two viewings to fully appreciate all the virtues of “Local Hero.”

In short, “Local Hero” is the story of a U.S. oil company that sends an executive to Scotland to buy … an entire town. The company wants to make the entire region a depot for the emerging oil industry in the North Sea. Although the entire town wants to sell for a tidy profit, many challenges are on the horizon.

The oil company executive is the “Local Hero”-to-be, and while he believes he’s on a business mission, everyone knows what he’s up to and he ultimately cannot avoid falling in love with the entire community and its laid-back virtues – although a rabbit is an early challenge.

I’ve noted in other reviews how British films are “slow-paced” (just take the Oscar-winning “Chariots of Fire”), but “Local Hero” isn’t just slow-paced. It is glacial-paced and you’ll come to appreciate this most regal of virtues in its crown.

The most aggressive character in “Local Hero” is in the U.S. and he plasters profanity on the oil company CEO’s penthouse windows as a “therapy” to the CEO (or he might be the chairman of the board … it doesn’t matter, you get the idea). You get a very, very small dose of him (but you’ll wish he had his own sit-com after the movie’s premiere) and the rest are … well, the rest.

Of course, all works out to everyone’s satisfaction, except the main character – who winds up back home in Houston and calling a red phone box (a British staple) to recapture what he left.

I’m not sure how you can find “Local Hero,” but find it … you’ll enjoy it. I guarantee it!
