Boo! We’re in the countdown to Halloween 2023! Today on Oct. 17, the big scare recommendation is a pair of films that are probably more sci-fi than horror: “Night of the Comet” and “They Live.” Still, there are scares, so it is Halloween season again!
“Night of the Comet” is a story where very few are left on Earth after a comet passes by. By very few, I mean a tiny number of regular humans and some zombie-like former humans. As for “They Live,” here’s an effort from John Carpenter that comments on lulling the population of the Earth in to mental somnambulance while infiltrating by hiding their hideous countenance.
I like “Night of the Comet” because it has the requisite empty streets of Los Angeles (I guess with the homeless camping out there now, Los Angelenos would like to see some empty streets today, too) and some zombie-like dudes trying to mess with girls at a mall.
I like “They Live” because it is from horror legend Carpenter and the story, while not played out really well, is creative – especially that you need a special pair of glasses (or, later, contact lenses) to see what the aliens really look like as they have taken over society and the propaganda they spread everywhere from billboards to magazines to TV – remember, this was released in the pre-dawn of the internet in 1988.
Both films are not great, while both had the opportunity to be great. Still, the stories are OK and you’ll enjoy the mall shoot-out scene with MAC-10s in “Comet” as well as “Rowdy” Roddy Piper legendary ad-libbed line in “They Live,” “‘I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I’m all out of bubble gum’”
So, continue your Halloween season with “Night of the Comet” and “They Live” … You’ll enjoy both; I guarantee it!
