Boo! We’re in the countdown to Halloween 2023! Today on Oct. 20, the big scare recommendation is to catch a couple of vampire flicks: “Near Dark” and “The Night Flier.” “Near Dark” is near perfect, while “The Night Flier” is nowhere near being anywhere close to perfect.
You’ll have to take each film separately …
“Near Dark” is a very underrated vampire film by director Kathryn Bigelow and I call it “near perfect” because it utilizes drama as well as gore to achieve horror. “Near Dark” is the story of a vagabond band of vampires and the local guy who gets enmeshed with them through a love interest.
You learn something of their story (the leader fought in the Civil War) and they take sadistic pleasure in getting their fill of blood. Yet, the word “vampire” isn’t spoken in the film.
You’ll need to follow this one closely, as it offers details about the vampires as well as the culture of vampires.
“The Night Flier” is a very creative story (of course, from Stephen King), but is not well told. It has cheesy production; bad work by all the actors with Miguel Ferrer (son of screen legend Jose Ferrer) only giving a slight glimmer of a decent job; and just a total fumble of a horror flick.
The vampire is suitably scary and, like I already noted, the storyline of a vampire flying a private aircraft at night into small airfields in the northeastern U.S. is really nice (but what else can you expect from King?).
Ferrer is a tabloid reporter who’s on a dry spell and he finally comes around the story about some maniac killing people at rural airports. Well, he finally gets his wish of covering the story and find the vampire. Sadly. He gets his wish.
The best part of “The Night Flier” is that the word “flier” is used correctly. A “flier” by traditional definition is a pilot or aviator or a handbill. No, a handbill is not a “flyer,” despite constant and persistent incorrect usage by virtually everyone today. Thank you “Night Flier!”
Let’s continue your Halloween season with both “Near Dark” and “The Night Flier” … enjoy both; I guarantee you will!
