Boo! We’re in the countdown to Halloween 2023! Today on Oct. 27, I’m turning to the genre of zombies with “Shaun of the Dead.” For 26 years since 1978, I considered the original George A. Romero zombie flick “Dawn of the Dead” as the best and most creative. However, Simon Pegg came along in 2004 with “Shaun of the Dead” and it was just as creative and it interjected humor into a grisly zombie flick.
“Shaun of the Dead” is the story of “Shaun,” who is played by Pegg, and he’s your basic … well, nerd. However, he comes into his own as the zombie apocalypse hits England. Yet, the humor begins as he stumbles one weekend morning to the convenience store across the street that is deserted (with a bloody handprint) and folks seem to be shuffling along in the distance (slow-moving zombies looking for a meal).
Soon, he and his best buddy are battling a zombie in their back yard, but, as they look to throw something at her, they pick through vinyl music albums to make sure they only throw those they don’t want to keep!
OK, so “Shaun of the Dead” isn’t conventional horror, but it has it all the best conventions: savagely grotesque eating of human flesh; killings of zombies; and all the rest. You won’t be disappointed on a zombie level while being entertained with a bit of humor.
Of course, there’s a twist at the end, but I’ll leave that to find out for yourself.
You won’t have any trouble finding “Shaun of the Dead,” so check out your streaming services … to get a scare and a laugh. I guarantee you will enjoy it!
