Boo! We’re in the countdown to Halloween 2023! Today on Oct. 30, we’re at the day before Halloween! Today’s recommendation of “Scream,” is, in some ways, even better than tomorrow’s final and best-ever Halloween movie. “Scream” is simply perfect in all respects and would be No. 1 for the Halloween season except … it doesn’t have Jamie Lee Curtis.
“Scream” is horror legend Wes Craven revitalizing the slasher genre in 1996. The offerings of horror flicks had degenerated into gore-fests and by filmmakers who tried to make audiences out-puke the competition. “Scream” changed all that and brought slasher films back to the pinnacle they deserve along with vampires and zombies.
“Scream” is about high school students (of course and naturally) and the whole stereotype of them is the foundation and basis for the movie. The beginning offers a home-alone Drew Barrymore taunted by the killer, who plays a trivia game with horror movie facts.
From then on, it’s off to the races with a creative story that begs the question, “Who’s killing whom?” Right up to the final reel (as they used to say for films presented on film), you’re challenged about the motive and identity of the killer. In winds up in a blood-stained climax (what else?).
The “kids” in “Scream” are headlined by Neve Campbell and a bunch of B-listers who lift themselves to an A-game throughout the film and Courtney “Friends” Cox headlines the adults, who include Henry “Happy Days” Winkler in an uncredited role as the high school principal.
You won’t have any trouble finding “Scream” as this Halloween season winds down. So, find “Scream” and I guarantee you will enjoy it!
