Today’s ‘must see’ movie: ‘Pillow Talk’ … give Thanks(giving) today for light comedy

Today’s “must” movie is “Pillow Talk” with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. On this Thanksgiving Day 2023, give a little thanks for comedies such as “Pillow Talk” and how light comedy with big-name stars can be such a delight.

In “Pillow Talk,” you have up-and-coming songwriter Hudson ending up pursuing his annoying and aggravated “party line” partner. Remember “party” lines on the telephone? Probably not, but there was a time when folks shared a “party line” and could eavesdrop on the other’s conversations.

Well, Doris is a working woman (Oh, goodness … it was 1959!) and needs to use the phone, but gadabout Rock always appears to be wooing a different woman with his charm and a song – hence that he’s having “Pillow Talk” with them.

Of course, the two meet, but only Rock knows that Doris is his “party line” partner and takes on a hick personality so that he can continue to see her. There are a lot of terms for this kind of action today and none are as funny or amusing as Rock’s chasing of Doris through the second half of the film.

“Pillow Talk” was one of three starring Doris and Rock, with the last released in 1964. You’ll enjoy each one, but “Pillow Talk” is the classic comedy and is the best of the three. The best thing, just like you’d find in “You’ve Got Mail” some 39 years later with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, is that there isn’t a foul word in the entire film and certainly no graphic sex scene.

Wow. Imagine that … no cursing and no visible sex.

So, on this Thanksgiving Day 2023, give thanks for fun cinema and enjoy “Pillow Talk” all over again – or, heavens, if you haven’t seen it, get it. It’s easy to find and you’ll enjoy it immensely … I guarantee it!
