Today’s “must” movie is “Foul Play” with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. Remember when Chevy Chase made funny movies? I know, it’s difficult since he’s been in so many stinkbombs – just look at “Dirty Work” with the late Norm Macdonald as one of the worst. However, “Foul Play” is just about his best and it’s a tour-de-force for Goldie, too.
With “Foul Play,” you get Hawn as a shy, retiring librarian who gets mixed up in a plot to assassinate the Pope (yes, the Pope). Chase is the detective who gets assigned to her case in the beginning when no one realizes what she’s gotten herself into.
Well, “Foul Play” offers a well-told, intricate plot and has a great supporting cast that includes Marilyn Sokol, Burgess Meredith, Brian Dennehy and, best of all, is Dudley Moore in his first “American” film as the orchestra conductor who falls into nothing but hilarious sexual situations.
“Foul Play” has just about everything from crime to a low-key kinda-chase scene to senior citizens fighting karate-style to a couple of old ladies arguing over a Scrabble game on how to properly spell a 12-letter vulgarity that’s more common today in Martin Scorsese films than anywhere else.
The film also is a showcase of how to mix comedy and drama and a near-perfect cast. You can still enjoy “Foul Play” again because it holds up well since its release 45 years ago … DANG! Forty-five years ago!
So, we’re on our way to the Christmas and New Year holidays, so find “Foul Play” … you’ll enjoy it immensely … I guarantee it!
