It’s movie time! My go-to comedy is ‘Down Periscope’ with Kelsey Grammer

Hey everybody, it’s movie time! I’m re-writing the words from the start of a Styx hit song and saying today is “movie time!” For movie time today, let’s watch “Down Periscope” with Kelsey Grammer. Here’s my go-to movie comedy that I frequently turn on when I just want some fun on-screen without having to immerse myself in the flick.

“Down Periscope” offers the storyline of a wacky crew in the Navy that overcomes all to become heroes at the end. In “Down Periscope,” you have a somewhat unmilitary commander who is a really good officer, but who also manages to hack off most of the brass that is conniving to get him out of the Navy. He gets a chance to save his career by taking command of a World War II-era submarine in a test of a diesel sub versus today’s nuclear-powered Navy.

Grammer is pitch-perfect as “Cmdr. Tom Dodge” and would be followed by any crew on any ship any time and any where … even though he’s an actor and not an officer in the military. Grammer’s “Tom Dodge” balances humor and insouciance with being really good at his job.

The crew on “Down Periscope” is an interesting piece of casting from Rip Torn as an admiral who likes Grammer; to Bruce Dern as an admiral who is set on sinking Grammer’s career; to Rob Schneider as the high-strung executive officer to Grammer; to Lauren Holly as the first woman to serve on a U.S. Navy submarine; to Harry Dean Stanton as the crusty engine room non-com; to some actors you’ve never heard about, but who do a wonderful job.

All-in-all, “Down Periscope” has its stereotypes, but those potential pitfalls are made positive by the cast. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding “Down Periscope” and when you do, you’ll enjoy the comedy … I guarantee it!
